MacBooks and MacBook Pros take a hit on performance when no battery is installedGearlog recently discovered that if you run your MacBook or MacBook Pro connected to the AC without a battery installed, you may notice a speed decrease of up to 37%.

Some users remove the battery from their MacBook or MacBook Pro when connected to power in order to extend the battery’s lifespan, but it seems quite unexpected to see this large a performance hit when this is done.

Apple publicly documents this on their website. It turns out that Apple justifies this speed reduction because it “prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide.”

A 37% speed decrease just because the laptop doesn’t have the battery installed seems a little silly, but if you want the maximum performance from your MacBook or MacBook Pro, keep the battery in when connected to power.
