RussianiPhone.ru is claiming that they have not only played around with a beta version of firmware 2.2.1, but that it finally includes support for the long awaited push notifications.
Their “proof” comes in the form of a screenshot (right) that displays an update badge on the Notes and Calendar apps. Sadly, no one else has seen a beta for iPhone firmware 2.2.1, leaving this rumor a bit suspect. Plus, it’s quite easy to add a badge to an app’s icon, thus, a potentially doctored image is far from proof.
This rumor might be false, but Apple still needs to get back on task with the push notifications. Push notifications were supposed to be the solution to the iPhone’s restriction on background processes. Instead of running an app all the time in the background, sucking up valuable processing power, updates for network enabled apps could be pushed to the phone, saving processing power.
For instance, instead of signing out of an IMing app, you could sign in once and then switch to any number of other apps. But instead of being signed out, your account stays logged in, and all messages are then pushed to your phone in the background. When you have time, you can go back to the app and view your new messages. This particular example could be a godsend for those without unlimited texting.
This rumor might just be wishful thinking, so we’ll have to wait this one out.

Im sure the badge on Calendar is possible already – i use mine with my works exchange system and if I recieve a calendar invite I think it appears there – the notes is a bit of a mystery though – I cant see why they would want that sort of indicator even if it were real. I suspect this is fake sadly
Stephen, you remind me of a good point. I do agree that this smells pretty fake, but I forgot to mention that the rumor elaborates a bit on the Notes badge. Apparently, along with push notifications, this beta firmware comes with support for syncing notes to MobileMe. So the badge is supposed to be a result of new messages retrieved from MobileMe. Still smells fake though.

Shame – sync with notes and a tasks app and sync would be on my list of desireables (as were Exchange Sync, 3g and GPS for the 2nd gen iPhone which we got)
These may come but not with 2.2.1, maybe 2.3 but more likely 3.x Notes Sync wont work in the same way as other calendar stuff though as Notes is stored locally on the machine with Outlook (and possibly entourage but i dont know) and would be impossible to therefore sync with push – tasks works like mail etc so would sync, but as we are lacking the eqivalent tasks app on the iPhone I don't see it. Shame and still a tantalising idea though.
