iTunes Top 10 Paid AppsWith the close of 2008 inching closer, and with 10,000 applications in its fold, Apple’s iTunes Store has released several lists containing the top 10 applications, both paid and free, in terms of download statistics. Aside from the overall top ten apps, the list also includes the top 10 applications per category based on the iTunes Store’s major categories: games, utilities, entertainment and more.

Interestingly, of the top 10 paid applications overall, six were game apps, three were music/entertainment app and only one paid application is used for business purposes. I don’t know about you, but I think this tell us something about how the iPhone (or iPod Touch) has become more of a gaming phone rather than a smart phone.

The pattern changes, though, when it comes to the top 10 free iPhone applications overall. The categories were varied, and only two game apps managed to get into the top ten: Tap Tap Revenge and Labyrinth Lite Edition. The rest belong to the entertainment, utilities and social networking categories. I could understand why games applications didn’t manage to make waves in the free apps category, since most of the free game apps are definitely something you would rather not install in your iPhone. Interestingly, Facebook is the only social networking-related app that managed to make it into the top of the download charts for free apps.

So, without further ado, here are the top 10 iPhone/iPod Touch applications, both free and paid, based on the number of downloads they received for 2008.
