Apple: Wait, no, stop, you don’t need Antivirus software

In quite possibly the stupidest move Apple has made since the hockey puck mouse, Apple has now removed a Knowledge Base page that advised Mac users to have Antivirus software installed on their machines.

Macworld reports:

“We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate,” Apple spokesman Bill Evans, told Macworld. “The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box.”

Yeah, so does Windows, and look how well that worked for them.

The page, which has apparently been giving sensible advice for years, has recently become a hot topic on the web because it seems to contradict Apple’s marketing message that Macs are less prone to viruses than Windows. Which they are, but they’re not immune. A fact with which, and this is where it gets really confusing, Apple seems to agree, because Evans then goes on to say that having antivirus software “may offer additional protection.” No kidding.

Macs have recently been gaining marketshare, leading some to speculate that as the computers become more popular, they may become targets for malicious programs.
