It’s official, the JesusPhone is coming to South Korea. Although it’s been in the U.S. a little more than a year, the iPhone has yet to reach some parts of the world. However, Apple is busy working to ensure that its best selling product makes it all the way across the world to all suitable markets.
What took so long? Well, South Korea requires a specific mobile platform, WIPI, of which most is based on Java. However, this policy was changed early this week by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), allowing carriers to finally decide whether they want to use WIPI or not. The WIPI restriction prevented Apple and other phone manufacturers from releasing devices in South Korea. However, with the restriction ineffective starting April, two providers in the country will be carrying the iPhone, SK Telecom and KTF.
The iPhone should hit South Korea in the spring of 2009.
