Smule, makers Ocarina app for iPhone aren’t content to have their app, which turns your iPhone into a musical instrument, be one of the most popular paid apps on the iTunes store. They want Ocarina-ists from all over to go head-to-head, pitting their mad musical skills against each other in that modern-day equivalent of the gladiator pit: YouTube. The big prize? Glory, for starts. And if that’s not enough, there’s also a grand total of $10,000 in prize money.
Smule has just announced the “This Contest Blows” Contest. Recognizing the growing group of talented Smule Ocarina performers, Smule has created a contest with $10K of prize money going to the top ten performers, based on YouTube ratings and reviews of performance videos.
Check out the contest invitation here. Details and contest rules are available here.
Smule’s contest is hoping to showcase some truly great performances, as well as discover some extremely creative and possibly wacky demonstrations of the Ocarina’s expressive nature. The contest ends on Friday, January 9 and contest winners will be announced on Saturday, January 10.
Additionally, Smule’s acclaimed Ocarina, the first and only app that transforms the iPhone into a true musical wind instrument [Ed: Oh, snap!], will very soon be receiving a major update, designed to allow users to not only play expressive music, but also have the ability to record their performances and share their music with anyone:
Users can record personal libraries of their music
Smule will host your personal libraries http://ocarina.smule.com/, allowing users to link to their own music from their favorite pages
Users can share their recordings with non-Ocarina users and even non-iPhone users over email
