The Evil Dr Gray has kidnapped your friends and taken over the planet! His dastardly plan of turning the entire planet Gray is almost complete. Stop him!
That is the premise of BurnBall for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The first screen you come to actually gives you an option to watch/read a backstory. This is quite refreshing, as not many games tell you a story, they are all about game play. If this particular story looks familiar, however, it’s because the artwork and characters were inspired by a blue hedgehog that I saw trading gold rings for food last summer.
The game play is actually pretty good. The idea is to tilt the iPhone or iPod touch to move a red ball (you) around the screen while trying to avoid the black robots. Once you have covered 75% of the board, you move to the next level. Each level increases in difficulty by either adding more robots or by adding a white robot to the mix. The black robots cannot move onto ground you have covered, but, in a menacing fashion, the white robots can go anywhere to get you. Bad robots. You can actually trap the robots for extra points, but it is quite difficult and can be frustrating, which makes it fun. The gameplay lends itself to a moderate level of replayability.
The graphics are run of the mill, but the gameplay is mostly smooth with only some intermittent choppiness on the higher levels when there are more robots and more moving parts on the screen. It’s mostly sufficient to play the game at a comfortable pace. In all fairness, I have only been able to get to level 7 so far because, well, I suck at the game. So if anyone is able to out “roll” me, please let us know if the graphics take even more of hit at higher levels.
Overall I would say this is a decent game, the blue hedgehog resemblance not withstanding.
