Macworld Expo Keynote live blog
Here we go. 2-1/2 hours away from the keynote, and our live blog is up and running. Stick with Appletell ongoing commentary leading up to, during, and after the keynote, complete with images and some video later on. The countdown begins now.

10:14 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Protests should be seen, not heard, my mom used to say.

6:39 pm Kirk Hiner said:

That’s it. Head back to the home page for details on today’s announcements. We’ve got a lot more coming. A LOT more, including photos of the new products/software. Thanks for joining us.

6:39 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Apple Store’s back up.

6:38 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Thanks Phil.

6:37 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Phil’s thanking us again for coming and everyone who helped put this show on.

6:37 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Seriously… what about the Mac Mini?

6:33 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Somewhere, John Mayer is curled in the fetal position on his bathroom floor, feeling really neglected.

6:32 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I think I’d rather have Tom Jones here, but whatever. I dig some Tony Bennett.

6:31 pm Jake Gaecke said:

How about we listen to some music by Tony Bennett? Ok.

6:29 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Now the iTunes Music store is supported on the iPhone with WiFi and 3G. Yet another reason to upgrade my 1st Gen iPhone. You can preview songs, buy music, and when you sync back to your computer, everything is updated. This starts today.

6:28 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Easy to upgrade your music to DRM free with songs you’ve already purchased.

6:28 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iTunes plus (DRM Free music) will now have 8 million songs. By the end of the quarter all songs on iTunes will be available as DRM Free.

6:27 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iTunes will now have 3 prices for songs. $.69, $.99 .29 (more will be offered at the lower than the higher). Coming in April.

6:26 pm Bill Stiteler said:

One last thing for the last keynote?

6:24 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Last thing = iTunes updates.

6:24 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Sticks with the “green” theme we’ve seen lately.

6:23 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Here comes the commercial.

6:23 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Ships in late January, early February.

6:22 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Oh, nevermind. You can’t missed that while typing.

6:22 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Take back and recycling program, too. But…can you remove it yourself?

6:22 pm Jake Gaecke said:

So no removable battery, but it works for a long time. 7 or 8 hours based on which graphics you choose to use.

6:21 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Which means fewer batteries in landfills.

6:20 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Life span has been expanded up to five years.

6:19 pm Kirk Hiner said:

3x the number of charges and 3x the amount of life than the industry standard.

6:18 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Batteries are custom shaped to allow for maximum use of space. The rest, I don’t understand. I was an English major, dammit! I made fun of people who majored in this kind of stuff.

6:16 pm Kirk Hiner said:

They’re playing a video now with the engineers talking about battery technology. I’m going to take a nap…oh, wait. It’ll last up to 8 hours, can be recharged up to 1,000 times, and is more economically friendly.

6:15 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Battery news up next. Longest lasting battery life ever.

6:14 pm Kirk Hiner said:

39% larger glass trackpad. Up to 2.93 GHz, 8GB memory max.

6:13 pm Kirk Hiner said:

FireWire 800 remains. Three USB ports. Digital Video out.

6:13 pm Jake Gaecke said:

1920 x 1200 133ppi, 60% greater color gamut 700:1 contrast ratio. There’s a glossy and a matte version. The matte version doesn’t have glass covering the screen and is not outlined in black, just metal.

6:13 pm Kirk Hiner said:

anti-glare option!

6:12 pm Kirk Hiner said:

0.98 inches, world’s thinnest 17″ notebook. World’s lightest, too.

6:12 pm Jake Gaecke said:

A MacBook has been the #1 selling notebook each of the last 8 months.

6:11 pm Kirk Hiner said:

17″ MacBook Pro is Unibody, of course.

6:11 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Hey what about the Mac Mini? Hello? Hey!

6:10 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Here comes #3 – 17″ MacBook Pro.

6:10 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Beta launches today.

6:10 pm Jake Gaecke said:

The beta is free to sign up, but eventually it will be a paid service.

6:08 pm Jake Gaecke said:

A document is not directly editable online, you can only add comments etc. But you can download the document as an iWork or MS Office document to edit it on your machine. You can also export a PDF.

6:07 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iWork.com works with most browsers, and operating systems. Safari, Firefox, well does anything work on IE? I guess this does.

6:05 pm Jake Gaecke said:

BTW, Phil is doing a really good ‘job,’ but I still haven’t heard any booms.

6:05 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Phil is apparently a rocket scientist in his free time.

6:04 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iWork.com is coming in beta soon. What is it? A new service for sharing iWork documents. You upload them and then you can collaborate. Documents are viewable online so you don’t necessarily need iWork on your computer, you can add comments and notes to documents. Documents are downloadable as well.

6:03 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iLife ’09 needs Leopard to run. You can get iLofe ’09, iWork ’09 and Mac OS X leopard in one box for 9, no family pack announced. Available in late January.

6:02 pm Jake Gaecke said:

for one license, for family pack, and with a new mac….

6:00 pm Jake Gaecke said:

More table features, easier formula editing now with over 250 functions. Functions have nice descriptions of what they do and there are tool tips to help you fully understand that function when using it.

5:59 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Lastly for iWork ’09 is Numbers. Next up the last announcement today, unless there’s ‘One more thing…”

5:58 pm Kirk Hiner said:

40 new templates. Some of them are pretty dorky looking, but that’s a great number. Bound to be something in here for everyone.

5:57 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Support for MathType, I know I’m excited, and EndNote too (bibliography help).

5:57 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Dynamic outlines allows you organize your outline by drag and drop, and it’s reflected in the document itself automatically.

5:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Although that tab view to find the pages you want is nice.

5:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Of course, Mariner’s already been doing that for years, and better, but yeah, I’ll use it when I use Pages.

5:56 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Pages… full screen view to keep distractions away from you so you can just focus on writing.

5:55 pm Kirk Hiner said:

If a call comes in, does it become part of the presentation? Again, my wife wouldn’t really like that.

5:55 pm Jake Gaecke said:

One extra feature… wireless control of your keynote presentations with an iPhone app. You see your slides, your notes and flick your finger to advance slides. It’s not free, but it’s only $.99

5:53 pm Jake Gaecke said:

New text transitions, and chart animations that make your charts look cool. There are more themes too.

5:52 pm Jake Gaecke said:

The transitions are pretty awesome, but it’s going to take a long time to get these kind of effects since each object has to be separate, the more the better. So take your time and add a ton of objects.

5:50 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Keynote can now do custom moves of objects between slides.

5:49 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Hey, here comes that 5th top download… iWork ’09

5:49 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Free on new Macs, upgrade, family pack. Ships later this month, early February.

5:49 pm Jake Gaecke said:

They’re also updating iWeb and iDVD they just didn’t have the time to share more features today.

5:48 pm Kirk Hiner said:

John Fogerty’s now teaching me to play Proud Mary. The video sits on top of the chord notation. Quite handy. So, where’s the iGuitar?

5:47 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Now you can buy songs in at least 3 forms from Apple. The song, the music video and now the music lesson so you can play it yourself.

5:47 pm Bill Stiteler said:

“In this lesson, you’ll learn how to pause before a lyric to make it look like you’re overcome with emotion, and allow the audience to applaud.”

5:46 pm Kirk Hiner said:

.99 per song lesson.

5:46 pm Jake Gaecke said:

It’s Patrick you fool (sorry editor :D )

5:45 pm Kirk Hiner said:

John Fogerty, some guy from Fallout Boy, Sting, and more on guitar. Sarah McLachlan on keyboard, a guy I’ve never heard of, Norah Jones, and so more to come.

5:44 pm Jake Gaecke said:

“Hold your applause because this is really cool” ~ Phil

5:44 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Garage Band comes with 9 basic piano and guitar lessons. Also comes with lessons direct from the artists.

5:43 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Well, aspiring musicians will still need someone to write out the tab for “Tom Sawyer” for them.

5:43 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Now everyone can play like John Meyer!

5:43 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Now Apple has it’s sights set on musical instructors. Apparently, we won’t be needing them anymore.

5:42 pm Jake Gaecke said:

So far: iPhoto ’09, iMovie ’09 and now GarageBand ’09 and we’re only going to talk about one of the cool new features and it’s called Learn To Play.

5:41 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Phil’s back.

5:40 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Title images and transitions are absolutely gorgeous. I may actually have to bother learning how to do this.

5:39 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Maps animates your travels from one location to another to another to another… There are a number of different themes for a customized look.

5:38 pm Jake Gaecke said:

There are new adjustments for slowmo or fast motion and some effects to enhance your videos

5:38 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Aliens fear iMovie…to easy to determine that the UFOs are real with all this image stabilization and slow-mo.

5:36 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Now all of us can try to figure out if bigfoot’s real and who really shot JFK.

5:36 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Video stabilization works amazingly.

5:36 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The Missing Manual folks are shooting of party streamers and dumping wine on each other right now, because people will be looking for help with all of this. Plenty of help.

5:34 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I take that non-linear comment back (partially). With the precision editor, there are two layers for editing video. I still want more.

5:34 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The interface is massive. I can’t imagine how small everything will look on my Macbook.

5:33 pm Jake Gaecke said:

There are a lot of context sensitive pop-up menus that make editing some things easier, but you’ll definitely need to get used to it.

5:32 pm Jake Gaecke said:

It’s still not the greatest for non-linear editing.

5:31 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iMovie now has video stabilization too for all of us who drink too much coffee!

5:30 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Apple to reintroduce actual editing features into editing software.

5:30 pm Jake Gaecke said:

There’s a new travel feature that animates your travels.

5:30 pm Jake Gaecke said:

New advanced drag and drop features. There are also themes that edit some things for you automatically.

5:29 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iMovie ’09, hopefully they’ve made it more like the old version so it, you know, usable again.

5:28 pm Bill Stiteler said:

New version of iMovie. But is it a new, good version?

5:28 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iMovie is getting updated

5:28 pm Bill Stiteler said:

“These cameras and these computers, they’re just… like, like magic. How they do this stuff?”

5:27 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I think Phil thinks he’s trying to explain this to his mom.

5:27 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Half an hour on face tagging and location tagging. Somebody get the hook.

5:26 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Geo tagging on places is really nice and intuitive, but you lose the functionality if you don’t have a camera with Geo chip, of course.

5:24 pm Kirk Hiner said:

But where’s Face Genius, that automatically selects other faces you may like based on the face you’re currently looking at.

5:24 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Yeah, okay, we get it. Face tagging. Move along, Phil.

5:21 pm Bill Stiteler said:

iPhoto to add special “Ohmigod I look so fat in that picture!” auto-delete feature.

5:20 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iPhoto ’09 Demo Time

5:20 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iPhoto ’09 now has updated printing options, more themes. Plus you can add maps for where the pics where taken. It’s all automatic.

5:19 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iPhoto can automatically sync with your iPhone/iPod touch for easy sharing.

5:18 pm Kirk Hiner said:

In the new slideshow feature, face detection automatically centers the faces in the frame. Wild, wild, wild new transitions.

5:17 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Slideshow themes are being added

5:16 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Facebook and Flickr functionality, now you don’t need plugins!

5:16 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iPhoto will now support Facebook and Flickr. It’s compatible with Faces. People can assign a name to the Facebook photo and it’ll sync up to your iPhoto account!

5:15 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Places uses Google Maps to organize your photos and show you where they came from.

5:14 pm Jake Gaecke said:

You can update your old photos with locations too, so you don’t need to have an iPhone or GPS equipped camera

5:13 pm Jake Gaecke said:

It figures out where you where when you took your geotagged picture, more than just long. and latt., it will find things like the Eiffel Tower etc.

5:13 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Places allows you to find photos by location. Places appear on a map.

5:12 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Anyone? Tom Jones: “From Russia With Love?” Anyone?

5:12 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Places works with geo tagging, hello iPhone, thank you Apple!

5:12 pm Bill Stiteler said:

I’ve seen faces, places, smiled for a moment…

5:12 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Ways to organize your pictures, Events, Faces and now Places

5:11 pm Kirk Hiner said:

This will cause a lot of problems for my family, I just know it.

5:11 pm Jake Gaecke said:

It even has Face Recognition, it will suggest photos that it thinks are the same person… um, amazing!?

5:11 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Face recognition? How am I going to feel when I search for my face and it pulls up my dog?

5:10 pm Bill Stiteler said:

That’s… kind of horrifying, actually.

5:10 pm Jake Gaecke said:

It works with Face Detection, it finds the face, and you type the name

5:10 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Faces was one of my favorite songs by Night Ranger.

5:09 pm Jake Gaecke said:

You can organize your photos by faces (people)

5:09 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Think he’ll apologize for the last version of iMovie?

5:09 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Events now gets Faces

5:08 pm Jake Gaecke said:

What’s new in iLife ’09? We’re starting with iPhoto

5:08 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Phil notes that in terms of attendance, the Apple stores get “100 Macworlds” every week. Oh, SNAP, Phil!

5:07 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iLife ’09

5:07 pm Kirk Hiner said:

New things! New things! Three of them!

5:07 pm Jake Gaecke said:

They’re growing twice as fast as the rest of the industry because their Apple…

5:07 pm Kirk Hiner said:

9.7 millions macs sold in FY 2008.

5:06 pm Jake Gaecke said:

We’re going to talk about the Mac

5:06 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Yes, Phil, what other company can have stores in other countries? Besides McDonalds, GAP, Subway…

5:06 pm Kirk Hiner said:

3.4 million visitors per week at the Apple store. Not customers, mind you, but visitors.

5:05 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Okay, not really.

5:05 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Holy crap, he just shot some guy from TUAW!

5:05 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Phil is calling out “all the sucka-punks who didn’t think I could rock this mic!”

5:05 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Talking about opening Apple Stores all over the world.

5:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

He’s very gracious. The people love Phil!

5:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Big ovation for poor old Phil.

5:03 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Lights are down. Here we go. There’s Phil.

5:03 pm Bill Stiteler said:

I like to imagine that Phil is doing that “slow walk to the stage” thing that Eddie Murphy used to do.

5:00 pm Bill Stiteler said:

well, that will make the silent protest easier.

4:59 pm Jake Gaecke said:

They just welcomed us and told us to silence everything.

4:57 pm Kirk Hiner said:

DRM free iGum. Recommended by four out of dentists to download their gum illegally.

4:55 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Conference attendees are entering now. Too bad there are no seats left open for them.

4:55 pm Bill Stiteler said:

APPLE ANNOUNCES DRM-FREE iGUM AT MACWORLD 09

4:54 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I’ve got gum under mine. Does that count? iGum?

4:53 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Well, there’s nothing underneath the chairs… darn

4:48 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I’m betting on a new Mac Mini and now it looks like iWork 09

4:47 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Mac Mini, iMac, Mighty Mouse, Mac Tablet, iMovie Cloud… what’s it going to be?

4:43 pm Kirk Hiner said:

We’re in. The curtains are very blue. The apple logo is very white. The music is very Euro-disco.

4:37 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Make sure to separate your .docs from your .pdfs from your .jpgs

4:32 pm Kirk Hiner said:

And you have to pay five cents to empty it.

4:31 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Unconfirmed Rumor: along with Apple’s Green Innotiative on their newest products, OS 10.6 may see the Trash be renamed to Recycle.

4:27 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Half an hour left… When are they going to let us in?

4:24 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Gil Amelio is running around here yelling, “I can do it! I can do it! Pick me! Pick me!”

4:17 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Unconfirmed rumor: Phil Schiller has locked himself in his dressing room, crying that “They don’t love me! They’ll never love me!” John Scully is rushing to the scene.

4:16 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Can you say dream keynote? Fabulous!

4:15 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Unconfirmed rumor: John Meyer will be replaced at this year’s Keynote by 80s sensation Taco.

3:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

That would be great. I’ve stopped buying the DRM songs.

3:52 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Cnet is reporting that Apple will be offering more DRM-free songs at different prices.

3:50 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Mass of press at the door. People keep staring at my badge. My eyes are up here, buddy!

3:40 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Riding the escalator up. The iPhone is a wonderful thing.

3:31 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Now we’re waiting in line for the Keynote at Moscone West.

3:30 pm Bill Stiteler said:

The Apple Downloads page lists “iWork ’09″ as the number 5 download… oops!

3:28 pm Bill Stiteler said:

Apple store is down. No surprise there.

3:26 pm Bill Stiteler said:

I’m still holding out hope that the iPhone will be opened to other carriers.

2:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

All of the below! Or none of the below. Or an assortment of the below. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. I’m still pulling for an updated eMate.

2:47 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Mac Mini, iMac, Mighty Mouse, Mac Tablet, iMovie Cloud… what’s it going to be?

2:45 pm Bill Stiteler said:

It’s 19 degrees in Minneapolis, so I’ll gladly take the 45 outside the Moscone.

2:40 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I feel bad for everyone who had to wait in line all night for this. It’s still pretty cold.
