Sling announces Sling Player for iPhone, Slingplayer HD

SlingPlayer is a wondrous device that allows you to control your TV (and/or DVR) over the internet using a broadband connection, which means you can watch your TV anywhere in the world (with a fast enough connection). Using a virtual remote, you can change channels, watch shows you’ve previously recorded, and even set up new programs to record. The video quality depended a lot on the strength of the connection, but setup was easy and it worked like a charm.

Sling Media has announced they’re bringing their SlingPlayer to the iPhone, allowing users to watch their home TVs from Apple’s beloved handheld. No word yet on whether the app will work with the iPod touch, but since every other version of SlingPlayer works over a wireless connection, I don’t see why this shouldn’t.

They’ve also announced that HD streaming will be available on the Mac side for the desktop client. I’m anxious to see a demonstration of this, because the last Sling HD set (that is, the physical box that you connect to your TV/DVR) simply had HD connectors—the video stream itself was still in standard web quality.

I’ll have more on this after I meet with the company later in the week, along with a hands-on report, photos, and info on the iPod touch compatibility.
