Eye-Fi preparing video sharing capabilities

More news from Eye-Fi. Today, they’re announcing that video upload capabilities to their wireless synchronization service will come sometime this year. Whether this will be issued as a firmware upgrade or a completely separate product is yet unknown.

The idea works basically the same as photos with Eye-Fi. In the not too distant future, you take a video with your camera that has an Eye-Fi card in it. After you take that video, you find your way to a wireless hotspot that works with Eye-Fi. The video is uploaded to Eye-Fi’s servers and automatically added to your YouTube account. The only limitations are those imposed by how long it takes to upload to your network, and how long (duration) a video can be on a service (like YouTube). Eye-Fi is committed to adding as many services as users need, and you can be sure that syncing to your computer will also be supported.

When I talked to Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi, he wanted to make it very clear that Eye-Fi is a great solution since you don’t need to have a special camera; it more than likely works with the one you have. Plus, it’s pretty much automatic. They’ve always envisioned their product as a great wireless upgrade to your camera, but what was surprising to them is how many people want to use the product to at least partially eliminate a cable at home. There’s always Flickr and the like—and soon, video services like YouTube—but for many, the most exciting feature is being able to have your pictures and videos automatically uploaded to your computer without the use of a cable.

Just remember, today Eye-Fi is only announcing the future availability of this functionality, so there’s still some waiting to be done. You can expect an update on this later in 2009 when Eye-Fi announces just how this feature will be made available, whether through an update or a new product. I’m hoping for a free product update.
