Google Chrome IconFor those of you eagerly awaiting Google’s Chrome—a new, extremely popular browser for Windows—to make its way to the Mac or Linux, hold on. According to Brian Rakowski, Chrome’s product manager, he expects and hopes that the Mac and Linux version will be ready by half way through this year. Now that Chrome for Windows has been updated to contain almost all of the features requested (such as extensions), they can focus their energy on expanding it.

On the Mac version, Brian has this to say:

“That team now is able to render most Web pages pretty well. But in terms of the user experience, it’s very basic. We have not spent any time building out features. We’re still iterating on making it stable and getting the architecture right.”

With Chrome on the horizon for Mac and Firefox 3 already on the platform, Apple best have something good up their sleeve for Safari if they want to keep improving its market share in this competitive market. In my opinion, all three of these browsers are great and offer their own advantages and disadvantages, but Safari’s lack of extensions (or add-ons) is one major thing it is lacking. All in all, one thing is for sure; I’m excited for the day Chrome makes its way onto my Mac.

  1. While Safari doesn't have an "official" extension system, that doesn't mean programmers haven't found ways to add a lot of Firefox's functionality to the browser.
