The Palm Pre has yet to be released, and there is already tons of talk about Apple, Palm, intellectual property (IP), and all the other goodies that come along with introducing new products that could be considered similar to others. You probably remember Tim Cook’s statement earlier this week on their conference call about their IP and competition (or shall I say, about the Pre, specifically). On top of that news, there are a couple comments from Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox to take into consideration.
In a story published in Reuters, she was quoted as saying, “Palm has been building its own intellectual property portfolio for 15 years, and we will defend it vigorously, if necessary.” In a separate comment on All Things Digital, she has also stated, “We have long been recognized for our fundamental patents in the mobile space. If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.” The key word that appears in both of these quotes is “defend.” Although I don’t think Apple will find much that they can go after in Palm’s Pre, it is good to see a company making such a strong stance beforehand.
