When I first saw this application, I was very excited. I remembered Bobby Carrot from one of my first mobile phones as a java download. To see it back in its former glory on the iPhone, well…it had a lot to live up to. Fortunately, for me, at least, it does.
If you’re not familiar with the concept, Bobby Carrot is a puzzle game. The aim is to collect the carrots scattered around the map on 72 levels through 6 different worlds. The concept is pretty simple, but as you can imagine, it gets incredibly difficult towards to later levels.
Gameplay
According to the game’s developers, you’re likely to get over 15 hours of carrot-filled fun from this download. I’d love to be able to confirm this, but unfortunately I don’t seem to have the 14 other hours spare to test it. I have however, been playing this game on and off for the past few days, and I’ve only managed to complete about 10 of the levels. If you step back while playing and look what you’re actually doing, not that much differs between levels. You’re still trying to get the carrots, you just use different paths and methods to get there. But this isn’t something you think of while you’re playing. You become greatly absorbed within the gameplay with only one task in mind—collect the carrots and get to the finish line in the fewest steps possible.

User Interface
The graphics look polished and well designed. The menus are simple, with big icons so you won’t have any trouble choosing the right option. The in-game graphics match that of the Play Station 1. Don’t expect a real-life looking rabbit, because that’s not what this game is about. The graphics don’t draw your attention from the game itself, they are just nice to look at, and fit the bill. Animation is smooth, but it is advised to restart your iPhone or iPod touch after installing to ensure the best experience.
Anything Else?
There’s only one thing that I don’t like about this game, and that’s the movement control. Rather than opting to use an on-screen D-pad, movement up, down, left and right is controlled by touching the respective area’s of the screen. This is a simple concept to follow, but when your hand is covering half the screen so your thumb can reach the top centimeter, you could easily fall onto some spikes or get yourself trapped. This is a minor issue, and another option of swiping across the screen is available, but personally I’m not keen on using all for edges of the screen for the character’s movement. I’d much prefer a simple four-directional pad in a bottom corner of the screen, or maybe to use the accelerometer as an alternative option.
Final Thoughts
If you were ever familiar with Bobby Carrot on other devices, you’ll love to see the latest adaptation available in the iTunes App Store. The price may look steep compared to some other titles, but with over 70 levels of carrot-finding fun, it’s worth the eight bucks. A simple pick-up-and-play game that’ll keep you boredom-free for hours. Heck, at least give the lite version a shot.
