By now, we’ve all seen the photos and video of the “Mac mini 2009 Edition” and, well…excuse me while I fall asleep. Five USB ports seems to be all there is to see on this bad boy, and the case design doesn’t look upgraded one bit, except for a slightly more rounded top edge. Are we seriously to believe that Apple would not continue its gray and black aluminum and glass material scheme?
For a moment, though, let’s assume this is totally genuine, and Apple didn’t change a thing about the Mac mini externally other than to add a few more USB ports. So what else did they do? I would hope they would show the mini some respect and upgrade it to performance levels on par with the MacBook. Not the lowest end MacBook, either. Give it at least a 2.4 GHz processor and the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. Anything less than 250GB of hard disk space would be quite a bit lacking, especially taking into account the fact that we might not see another upgrade for years (the most recent revision was Summer 2007.)
Of course, I’m hoping Apple re-thinks its position on the Mac mini. As of right now, it gets just about as much love as the “hobby” Apple TV. I’d like to see a re-designed Mac Mini that either gets really small and sleek or gets really customizable and expandable. There is a demand for a mid-range tower, Apple. Fulfill it, because right now Hackintoshes have that market cornered.

I see a Firewire 800 port, a MiniDVI display port and a DisplayPort adaptor which would also be upgrades…
I guess we will have to wait and see if this genuine.
