A new setting called Find My iPhone within iPhone OS 3.0

Hidden within the options menu for MobileMe in the iPhone’s settings, there’s a new option that’s appeared in the 3.0 beta. Named “Find My iPhone,” I’m sure you can guess it’s primary use.

It would appear that Apple will offer a service to MobileMe customers allowing them, if this setting is activated, to request the location of their iPhone—whether because they’ve lost it, or it’s been stolen. Sounds like a very useful feature to me, but what about security? The access to the iPhone’s location is only given through MobileMe. The security therefore, is the same as Back to My Mac. No one else will have access to this information, so there’s no worry of being spied on. Well, no more than usual. Let’s just hope the thief forgets to turn this setting off, too. Or possibly you would have to provide your MobileMe password to turn the feature on and off.

There’s nothing about this service on the MobileMe website yet. I expect an update will appear around the same time as iPhone 3.0 ships.
