If you’re a design geek like me, one of the fun memes that’s been running around is to take albums, books, and now, video games, and redesign them in the style of The Criterion Collection. Criterion, known for their top-notch restoration and presentation of the work of history’s greatest filmmakers (and, er, Michael Bay), is also know for the quality of their keep cases. Using start imagery (which may or may not actually come from the movie) and juxtaposing it with text, Criterion designs do a wonderful job of capturing the mood of the film.

The users at Select Button have created box art for video games (some classic, some modern) using this approach. Above is my attempt using my favorite game, Sid Meier’s Civilization, using public domain art from Wikimedia Commons. The artwork from the Select Button crew is even better:
