WWDC 2009 iPhone OS 3.0

At this years WWDC, Apple spilled some more information about the highly anticipated iPhone OS 3.0 announcement. We already knew plenty of information about this new software, but as usual, Apple had a couple of surprising announcements. Among them was the announcement that the iPhone 3.0 software will be available June 17th, about a week from today!

What we knew:

  • Cut, copy, and paste works across all apps
  • Landscape mode available in Mail, Notes, Messages
  • Safari has auto-fill for forms
  • Enhanced support for renting and buying iTunes content
  • Parental controls are being brought to apps, even those from the App Store
  • In app purchases, Peer to Peer connectivity (easy multiplayer gaming)
  • Accessories can work through the Dock connector or Bluetooth
  • Turn-by-turn direction apps supported
  • Push text alerts, numerical badges for homescreen icon, and custom alert sounds

What we now know:

  • Over 100 new features
  • 29 carriers will support MMS at launch, AT&T will have it later this summer
  • Search even works on the server as well as local files
  • Tethering is on and doesn’t require special software – 22 carriers will support it at launch, AT&T wasn’t mentioned here
  • iTunes U is now also supported on the iPhone iTMS
  • HTML5 support is being brought to Safari
  • Even more languages are being added
  • Find my iPhone allows MobileMe users to locate their iPhone on a Google Map from a web browser on their desktop
