iTunes LP not for indie labels, quite expensive

At first glance, iTunes LP seems like an interesting new way to revive some of the sales of records. They offer the same songs available as single/album downloads on other stores, but also provide their own visual twist on the content, making them different (and more expensive) than simply purchasing the list of songs. They are, in a way, trying to give the consumer a look and feel lost by not purchasing the physical media from a store with a 21st century digital twist. That said, new restrictions discovered about this type of media may show this isn’t going to be quite as successful as previously thought.

According to Gizmodo, a man running a small music label company outside of Chicago has recently contacted Apple about creating an iTunes LP album. He was told that 1.) iTunes LP albums aren’t being offered to indie labels yet, and 2.) they cost a nice $10,000 to produce and put onto the iTunes Store. This alone is kind of depressing for people looking to create an LP album to potentially boost their sales as they may not even be able to afford that if Apple were to even allow them to have the chance to create one.

The iTunes LP idea could work, Apple, but only with creative indies behind it pushing the limits.
