NASDAQ launches impressive iPhone app

The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (a.k.a. NASDAQ) has surprised many with its new, free official iPhone app. The app, titled NASDAQ Portfolio Manager, allows users to look up various stocks and get access to data in real-time when the market is open. The main app screen features all the stock information that you’d expect, but when you rotate your iPhone into landscape view, you’ll be treated to a full chart with a variety of different viewing options. Also, if you run your finger over the chart, you can even pinpoint stock prices at various dates.

Another interesting thing about the NASDAQ Portfolio Manager is that when you’re in portrait view of the app, you can swipe to the right and be taken to all the latest tweets about that particular stock, taken from the StockTwits service, so anyone who tweets with StockTwits’ $STOCKNAME syntax will have their tweet shown here. You’ll also find a separate StockTwits option along the bottom of the app which allows you to go deeper into what people are publicly saying about stocks on the service. From here, you’re able to find the full stream of tweets about stocks, or customize the stream to show things like tweets about Futures or tweets from StockTwits’ “Top Data Junkies,” which is particularly interesting because it seems NASDAQ has decided to use StockTwits’ APIs over Twitter’s in their app.

With the new NASDAQ Portfolio Manager app, you’re also easily able to keep track of your own stock portfolio by entering the stocks you own, including the price you paid for it, the date of acquisition, and the number of shares you own. You can add any NASDAQ stock to your Watch List by simply clicking the star icon along the top of the screen when you’re on a stock’s page. However, one thing you can’t do from NASDAQ’s app is actually buy and sell stocks, which would be a nice feature to have in future versions of the app. Overall, it seems to be a very slick and solid app, and also seems to be quite an endorsement for the StockTwits service.
