Traffic Live is Navigon’s real-time crowdsourced traffic information feature. If you want it already, then you probably know it’s used to calculate better routes, especially when traffic is bad. GPS directions are good, but ones that get you around traffic congestion are great. Just think, for $24.99 you can avoid back ups and rush hour(s) forever (in theory).
The feature works seamlessly. There are on screen alerts that warn you of construction, accidents or other congestion. The severity of congestion is also detailed. This updates estimated times of arrival, and if necessary, the user can choose an alternative route to avoid
peopletraffic. If you’re interested in where the data comes from, well, it, like Soilent Green, is made of people. Other GPS units across the country, or preferably close by, share their data, along with taxi drivers, traffic cameras, road sensors and the like to construct an overall picture of traffic movement. With over 1.4 million drivers uploading their data, it should be sufficient to get you from home to coffee in record time.
In addition to the Traffic Live, the latest update adds at least two other features. First is in-app purchases. Unfortunately, Traffic Live isn’t free, but at a one time fee of $24.99 (or $19.99 for the next 4 weeks) it isn’t too bad. In-app purchases could potentially be used for map updates in the future, as well. They’ve also added the ability to route to indefinite locations. You can essentially drop a pin onto the map and route yourself towards it.
It’s nice to know my favorite GPS app is constantly getting better. The update is available now in the App Store, just waiting for your purchase/upgrade.
