Re Remote in hand

I stopped by the New Kinetix booth today at CES 2010 to check out the Re Remote. They gave me a full product demo. Check it out.

This remote is similar to the L5 remote, it just costs more. This premium cost does not get you any more features or a better looking interface get you one more feature, a built in remote database. Though L5 has expressed the intent to allow users to import and export remote settings with their app. Whether this will be easy to do, or linked to the internet is yet to be discovered. Both remotes will learn your IR codes if necessary. It’s worth pointing out that the Re is much larger than the L5. The guys at L5 wouldn’t let me film their interface since it was still subject to change before release. Suffice to say, it’s much prettier than the Re’s. Thank God for competition. It will be interesting to see what changes between now and launch with both of these companies. Stay tuned.

Update: Turns out that the Re actually has one extra feature. It has a built in remote database from day 1. I’d be surprised if nothing happens on this from with L5, but Re actually licensed a database for remote codes. They are also exploring interface improvements. Stay tuned.
