Quirky Spacebar shelf

If you have Apple gear, then it’s quite likely that you won’t buy just any accessory. No, it has to both look good and do something useful. Quirky’s newest product, the Space Bar, is both sleek and useful. And just to top it off, it’s priced reasonably, too.

Quirky Spacebar with iMac

The Space Bar is simple product. It’s a shelf with a built in USB hub. But simplicity is not so easily executed, but Quirky sure makes it seem like it is. The Spacebar is a very well designed aluminum shelf with six USB ports that are easily accessible on the front. The shelf is meant to give you a space on your desk to tuck away your keyboard after a long day of typing. It will cover your Apple longboard quite nicely. I just talked with Quirky, and was told that the Space Bar actually does come with an AC adapter, so you won’t have to worry about your USB ports not having enough power.

Want one? I know I do. You can grab one now at Quirky’s site for $42. If you decide to wait, it’s going to go up to $48, which is still a decent price.

Update: As pointed out in the comments below, this product is in pre-sale mode. That means it won’t be produced until it meets the threshold for pre-orders. Pre-sale numbers continue to fluctuate, but the product was significant enough for Quirky to send out a press release, so I’m confident this product will eventually make it to your desk should you choose to pre-order.

  1. OK, I thought this was pretty neat and the solution to my having to plug and unplug USB ports all the time – but you DO realize this product isn't for sale yet????? You sign up for a POTENTIAL product. I think you need to read the web info a bit more closely next time.

  2. I actually did read this fairly carefully, but some details slip through the cracks, apologies. Quirky thought this was worth sending a Press Release out about, so I'm betting it will be made at some point. Sorry for the confusion Cyd. I've updated the article to make it more clear.

  3. Thanks Jake! I'm hoping you're right about it being made sometime – I hope it's soon.

  4. Hey Everyone…

Mike here, ideator of the space bar @ Quirky.

The product should be available before the end of may.
A slight redesign is being made due to the many suggestion on the number of ports on the front and the back. (4 on the front and two on the back is what is being now proposed and what I have suggested from the start)
If you'd like to take a crack of designing your own product or simply naming an existing product, join quirky today!

  7. Looks pretty slick…and I agree the price is reasonable. Though, I'd much rather have only two USB ports on the front and the rest on the back. Running cables to the front doesn't generally make sense for things like printers and scanners and will just end up creating visual clutter.

  8. @Mike – Great to heart the product is releasing soon. Based on my own usage habits, having two ports on the front and four on the back would make more sense. My two cents…

  9. Well, guess what – I got my Quirky Space Bar on December 24, 2010. It's really nice – but what a wait . . .
