100,000 itunes app store appsMacworld 2010 is upon us, where numerous developers will be showing off the iPhone apps they’ve released and previewing what’s ahead. Appletell will be there to find the gems, but what about all the apps that won’t be there? There are a lot of great apps in the app store, but that doesn’t meant there couldn’t be even more. What kind, you may ask? Well how about…

Real Biometric Security

Sure, they have faux finger print scanners and retinal scanners by the bucket, but when do we get the real ones? Think of how much harder it would be to steal your phone, then. At least then if people get their hands onto your phone, they won’t be able to get their eyes on your data; which, when you think about it, is the real prize on any phone. Sure, the hardware has some value, but the information in your address book, on your email application, accessible via your social networking applications, or, heaven forbid, your banking applications, could be devastating.

An iris scan or facial recognition technology via the camera could be a great way to keep people out of the phone. Granted, it would not do much good for iPod Touch users, who would still have to rely on a password locking system.

Hulu on Tap

Sure, you could, in theory, get Hulu via Safari, but an app similar to the Youtube one would allow for full screen video with easy search and no constant screen expanding. It would bring the best of web based TV to your pocket, and add a new revenue stream. It would not even have to modify the business model since you can still see the ads in between the sections of the show. There was talk of this one coming out earlier in 2009, but it seems to be a stalled effort.

Integrated Twitter

Instead of having to open an app for my Twitter, how about a scrolling newsfeed on the bottom of the screen (of course, it has to have an on/off option). You don’t really want your boss seeing posts about your video game fetish.

Of course, that is only a tasting of a few possible great apps that we could enjoy in the future. As the iPhone begins to develop and new developers are tossed into the mix applications that have we can’t even think of now, may become the ones that we cannot live without in the future.
