iDevice video chatting—it’s the rumor that just won’t quit. This time, 9to5Mac found icons and references in the code of the iPhone 3.2 Software Development Kit that point a big old finger at video chatting. There’s even a reference to iChat inside of the iPhone OS. Perhaps Apple is readying iChat to
crushcompete with BeejiveIM and Meebo. You can see that the icons show that a future app and piece of hardware may be able to make and receive video calls. I’m not sure if that means a future iPad, iPhone, both or neither. I’m hoping Apple is still hiding something about the iPad from us, but I’m not holding my breath. What’s much more likely is the next hardware revision of the iPhone will have a front facing camera, and possibly the next version of the iPad (which will inevitably come out far sooner than any of us expect just to thank all of us early adopters) will as well.
If past events are any clue to the future, we’ll likely keep rumoring about this for two to three more years, and then finally be amazed by video chatting when it’s finally in our hands on an Apple device. I’ll be the first to admit that I want this feature much more than I need it; really, how often would you even use video chatting on an iPhone?
Then again, it might take a company like Apple to change that…
