Rumor: Multitasking coming to iPhone OS 4.0?

iPhone and AppsThis rumor certainly isn’t new; it comes up almost every time an iPhone OS update is around the corner. That being said, there’s now new evidence supporting the idea that Apple may finally be allowing multitasking of third-party applications in the new version of their phone’s operating system. Apparently, in a commented out section of code in the new iPhone OS 3.2 beta there is a reference to a multitasking dialog box. While this could mean something else to the Apple developers who created it and know more about the inner workings of the operating system, it is certainly interesting to see.

Regardless of whether this rumor holds any truth, I would love to see multitasking on the iPhone. If Apple can find a way to make multitasking efficient (in terms of user interface as well as battery life), I’d be all for hammering the CPU even more on my iPhone during my use of it. Who doesn’t want to listen to Pandora through their speakers while buffering a video and reading a book while on the go?

Okay, that might be a little much, but you get my point.
