As part of the iPhone OS 4.0 announcement today, Apple revealed Game Center. With 50,000 games and entertainment apps available on the store, Apple wanted to help make the experience using these games better. In a sentence, Game Center brings social networking to iPhone/iPod Touch games. Much as XBox Live does, Game Center will support the ability to invite friends to play against you as well as make matches for you using these games. It’s all done through Apple’s application, too.
However, Game Center also includes leaderboards and achievements for games as well, making the experience almost exactly like XBox Live for the iPhone. That said, I’m sure Apple has implemented it better than Microsoft did. iPhone gamers should see this application as a huge entertainment center, and I’m sure it will even help to boost the sales of many game applications.
If you enjoy games on your iPhone, this is quite exciting. It will be available later this year and we’ll have further details as Apple releases them.
