Well, we’re finally here. After months of the traditional speculation and rumor mongering, Apple’s 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference is finally upon us. The lead up to this one has been a bit more eventful than most, what with all of these iPhone HD images coming out of Vietnam and that entire Gizmodo iPhone brouhaha.

Be sure to check out our full coverage of the WWDC 2010 Keynote announcements.

6:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

And that’ll do it. Thanks for following along with us. Check back for additional coverage and photos as we lead up to the launch date!

6:55 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Now they’re congratulating each other.

6:50 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Still gushing.

6:48 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Now, Apple is just gushing about their products. They tend to do that, don’t you know.

6:46 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iPod touch users will finally get the upgrade for free.

6:46 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iOS 4.0 available June 21st.

6:45 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iOS 4 is free for all compatible devices. Sorry first gen iPod touches and pre 3G iPhones.

6:44 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Preorders start on June 15th, a Tuesday. Odd day choices if you ask me.

6:43 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Better than a Saturday. Preorders start June 15th.

6:43 pm Jake Gaecke said:

June 24th. What? A Thursday?

6:42 pm Jake Gaecke said:

ATT is making a “generous” upgrade offer. If you can upgrade anytime in 2010, then you can upgrade to the iPhone 4 at these prices. Does that mean all iPhone 3GS users are SOL again?

6:42 pm Kirk Hiner said:

8GB 3GS for .

6:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Oops.

6:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

16GB = 0. 32GB = 0.

6:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

16GB = 0. 32GB = 0.

6:41 pm Jake Gaecke said:

“Pricing: there’s two colors. White and black. Pricing — 9 for 16GB, 9 for 32GB.”

6:41 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Oh, well that’s cool, perhaps it will support iChat then.

6:40 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Yes, but you can’t video call a landline.

6:40 pm Kirk Hiner said:

FaceTime (as it’s named) will be an open industry standard.

6:39 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I’m assuming because more people have phone numbers than iChat accounts.

6:39 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Camera switching, check.

6:38 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Switches between front and back, portrait and landscape.

6:38 pm Jake Gaecke said:

If it has to be WiFi only, why not make iChat for iPhone?

6:38 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Cellular providers later.

6:37 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Can it switch between the front and rear cameras? That’d be useful.

6:37 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Video calling needs wifi? Why? Can’t AT&T’s restricted network handle anything?

6:36 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Also, iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only, obviously.

6:36 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Well, without jailbreaking there’s no easy way to steal applications. That’s usually a big plus for the Windows crowd.

6:36 pm Kirk Hiner said:

It does require WiFi, however.

6:35 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Still…what does that leave the iPhone naysayers other than the ability to view porn?

6:34 pm Kirk Hiner said:

And here, I was hoping for that Apple TV update.

6:33 pm Jake Gaecke said:

nope, Video calling. Still awesome though

6:33 pm Jake Gaecke said:

One more thing. Haven’t done that in a while. Can I buy an iPhone today?

6:30 pm Jake Gaecke said:

They turn on iAds for all iOS 4 devices on July 1st, meaning we’ll probably have new iPhones or at least the new operating system by July.

6:29 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iAds will need to be super interesting to keep anyone’s attention. I have to hand it to Nissan. All they had to say was electric car, and I was hooked. Now I want a LEAF and I barely even have any idea what it is.

6:25 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Of course, iAds make the iPhone no different from your typical Lady Ga Ga video, so…

6:24 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Ok, super. When can I buy an iPhone 4?

6:23 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I think we all hate ads, but at least it will help more developers make free or lower cost games. As long as they include a buy out of ads option, I’m fine with it.

6:22 pm Kirk Hiner said:

“Why are we doing iAds? To help our developers earn money.” In other words, this is your fault, you cheapskates who refuse to actually pay money for the products you use.

6:21 pm Kirk Hiner said:

And here come the iAds. Forgive me if I don’t care at all about this.

6:21 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Glad to see Apple supports at least one Adobe technology.

6:17 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I’m loving the PDF functionality.

6:17 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Still don’t like the iPhone as an eReader. Too small.

6:16 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iBooks is coming to iPhone. Obvious. When will it come to Mac?

6:16 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iBooks is coming to the iPhone with iPhone 4.

6:16 pm Jake Gaecke said:

When will then be now?

6:15 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Out “soon.”

6:15 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iOS 4 is at gold master candidate today.

6:15 pm Jake Gaecke said:

They’re adding Bing? Why? I tried to use Bing one time, 5 minutes later I gave up and found what I was looking for with Google. Bing is definitely the Stormtrooper of the search engines. It wouldn’t be able to find the droids they were looking for…

6:14 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The Bing rumor was true. You can select your search engine from Google, Yahoo and Bing.

6:13 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I would’ve liked to see more of iOS4, but we’ll see what’s ahead yet.

6:12 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Boom, he said it.

6:11 pm Jake Gaecke said:

OK, so we’re not using the wifi. Item 6 isn’t much of a suprise. It’s iPhone OS 4. They’ve renamed it to the most obvious thing they could have, iOS 4.0. It just makes sense considering it’s more than iPhones, and has been for some time. iOS 4.0 has all that great multitasking and folder business that we saw earlier this year.

6:06 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Uh oh, Steve wants to kill the blogging.

6:04 pm Jake Gaecke said:

All that, for .99. If they approve it anyhow. Something like 7 days turnaround I heard before…

6:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iMovie for iPhone will be a paid app, but only .99.

6:03 pm Jake Gaecke said:

And it will output at full quality

6:03 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Quality is stunning. My old GL2 doesn’t look this good. Looks like I’ve found a way to finance the iPhone 4 purchase.

6:03 pm Jake Gaecke said:

That travel theme looks pretty sweet. It does the fake Polaroid thing, which is always a plus.

6:02 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Edit video, add transitions, title, themes…

6:01 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Wow, iMovie for iPhone is ridiculous.

6:01 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Make that Aperture for iPhone.

6:00 pm Jake Gaecke said:

ok, if they can make iMovie for iPhone, then they need to get on iPhoto for iPhone. I want to be able to edit my pictures on the go!

5:58 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iMovie for iPhone, WHAT!?

5:58 pm Jake Gaecke said:

The LED light can be used during video taking, as can tap to focus. Nice features.

5:57 pm Josh Holat said:

Well that just made my Nikon D90 somewhat pointless. 720p at 30fps.

5:57 pm Jake Gaecke said:

720P at 30FPS, sweet

5:57 pm Josh Holat said:

HD video recording? Yes!

5:56 pm Jake Gaecke said:

5MP up from 3, and the pixels haven’t changed size. That means the chip is bigger. Nice.

5:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

5 megapixel, and a backside illuminated sensor, along with the previously mentioned LED flash.

5:56 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Backside illuminated sensor, very nice. It should make those crappy dark images some people like to take a little less crappy.

5:55 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Again, one less thing for the tech media to whine about.

5:55 pm Jake Gaecke said:

The’ve added a removable lens system! JK.

5:54 pm Josh Holat said:

Number five is a whole new camera system.

5:53 pm Josh Holat said:

It’s hard to believe we’re only half way through this thing.

5:52 pm Jake Gaecke said:

They built Jenga.

5:52 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Steve just mentioned the network being crappy again. Someone is getting fired.

5:51 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I wonder if “tilt”-based games will actually work now.

5:51 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Provides 6 axis motion sensing.

5:50 pm Josh Holat said:

It’s hard to understand how Apple fits so much stuff into such a small device.

5:50 pm Kirk Hiner said:

#4 is a gyroscope?

5:50 pm Jake Gaecke said:

New piece of hardware, a gyroscope. That means more tilty games.

5:50 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Improved battery life. 7 hours of talk time. 300 hours standby.

5:50 pm Jake Gaecke said:

And somehow, they increased battery life.

5:49 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Wow, if the iPhone were a person, it would be wearing skinny jeans. How do they get all of that stuff in there?

5:48 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I can just see it now. iPhone apps, 78%HD apps, and HD apps. Developers gone wild!

5:48 pm Josh Holat said:

Seventy eight percent of the pixels on and iPad? On a screen one third the size? Yes, please!

5:47 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Uh oh, developers need to do “a little bit of work” to really optimize for the new display. Free upgrades or paid?

5:46 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I wonder how long it will take to get a display of this density into an iPad. Next year please?

5:46 pm Jake Gaecke said:

The iPhone 4 display looks noticeably darker. Better black levels? I think so.

5:45 pm Kirk Hiner said:

800:1 to contrast ratio…on a phone.

5:44 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Photo difference is impressive between the two, but again, I’d want to see this on an actual phone display before making a judgment.

5:44 pm Jake Gaecke said:

How many people do you have to fire around here to get some internet?

5:43 pm Josh Holat said:

Network problems. What did you expect at a geek conference?

5:43 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Uh oh…iPhone 4 troubles!

5:42 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Don’t tell the media pundits that. They’ve spent the last couple weeks explaining why Android is the better option.

5:41 pm Josh Holat said:

Phone manufacturers worldwide are probably crying right now. Apple just upped the bar even further.

5:41 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Ok, I just turned on my iPhone and it looks blurry to me now. Darn you Apple!

5:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Showing a bunch of comparison images, but I imagine that doesn’t mean a thing on a big screen. We’ll see them when get them on the iPhone.

5:40 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Kirk, at a certain distance, yes.

5:40 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Oh, I get it. The pixel density exceeds the abilities of the human eye, at a certain distance.

5:39 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Is he saying the iPhone has better resolution than the human eye can even see?

5:39 pm Josh Holat said:

I though the same thing, Jake.

5:39 pm Jake Gaecke said:

I have to admit, when I heard retina display, I thought this was some kind of retinal identification system. Now I’m a little disappointed, but I like the new screen :D

5:39 pm Josh Holat said:

Looks like the rumors were right: new iPhone display

5:38 pm Jake Gaecke said:

So smooth.

5:37 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Retina display? Teach me, Steve. Teach me.

5:37 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Four times the amount of pixels. Who feels dense now?

5:37 pm Josh Holat said:

All that was only one of the eight he’s going to talk about? Wow again.

5:36 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Stainless steel. Glass on front and back.

5:36 pm Jake Gaecke said:

And the antennae are the metal sides. Amazing.

5:36 pm Josh Holat said:

The structure band around the phone also serves as the antenna. Wow.

5:35 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Ooooo, there are two mics on this guy

5:35 pm Josh Holat said:

So when can we preorder this newfangled iPhone 4? Count me in!

5:35 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Second mic offers noise cancellation. Cool.

5:35 pm Jake Gaecke said:

LED flash, front facing camera, oh Steve, you shouldn’t have

5:34 pm Jake Gaecke said:

less than a centimeter thick at 9.4 mm

5:33 pm Jake Gaecke said:

24% thinner than iPhone 3GS, thinnest smart phone available

5:33 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Looks nice. But…comfortable to hold? We’ll see.

5:33 pm Jake Gaecke said:

“looks like a beautiful old Leica camera”

5:32 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Hhmm, looks familiar…

5:32 pm Jake Gaecke said:

iPhone 4!

5:30 pm Josh Holat said:

Wow, quite a few stabs at Android in there. iPhone has triple the market share.

5:29 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Now Steve would like to talk about the iPhone. Yes Steve, go on…

5:29 pm Josh Holat said:

Here we go, time for the iPhone.

5:28 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Developers have made billion on iPhone apps.

5:27 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Air guitar? How so?

5:26 pm Kirk Hiner said:

It’s available today for .99.

5:25 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Ah, but they included Queen in the announcement, so they’ve won my loyalty. Moreso if the song is “The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke.”

5:25 pm Jake Gaecke said:

The only thing that will draw me to Guitar Hero on iPhone over Rock Band or anything else really is a physical controller. A good one.

5:24 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Guitar Hero? Oh brother. I’m a Rock Band kind of guy.

5:24 pm Jake Gaecke said:

You can now farm anywhere. At home, on the go, at school, at work, in the middle of a meeting, in the middle of a live blog. Excuse me, I just have to get to something real quick…

5:23 pm Kirk Hiner said:

On the other hand, my wife will finally quit hitting me each night with the iPad because she can’t play Farmville on it.

5:22 pm Jake Gaecke said:

And it syncs with your Facebook farm.

5:22 pm Josh Holat said:

Farmville for the iPhone? Today is a sad, sad day. Productivity worldwide will drop P.

5:21 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Farming for iPhone. Interesting that there are far more people interested in virtual farming than real farming…

5:20 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Perhaps this adaptive bitrate thing will help with AT&T’s new teared, err, tiered data plans

5:19 pm Jake Gaecke said:

“Netflix is taking advantage of Apple’s adaptive bitrate technology. And it allows us to seamlessly switch between networks.”

5:18 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Indeed, the iPhone app lives!

5:18 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Looks like…yep.

5:17 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Maybe Netflix will announce the iPhone app they’ve been trying to hide in the iPad app

5:17 pm Kirk Hiner said:

From eBay to Netflix.

5:16 pm Jake Gaecke said:

And looks like eBay is still making money, lots of it from their app

5:15 pm Jake Gaecke said:

What about the ones we don’t approve? Well why is that? What are the reasons? 1: the app doesn’t do what you said it would. 2: It uses private APIs… and if they change the app will break… and the third reason? They crash

5:14 pm Kirk Hiner said:

#1 reason for rejection is not porn. Who knew?

5:14 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Good to know they’re bringing app approval times down

5:14 pm Kirk Hiner said:

95% are approved within 7 days.

5:13 pm Kirk Hiner said:

15,000 apps (new and updates) submitted each week.

5:12 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Next up? iPhone App Store.

5:11 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Looks like that’s it for the iPad.

5:11 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iBooks to support PDFs later this month.

5:11 pm Josh Holat said:

iBooks got an update: Notes. You can now add Notes to appear alongside of your books. Nice addition.

5:10 pm Jake Gaecke said:

Hey everyone, Jake here.

5:10 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Apple has 22% of the ebook market already.

5:10 pm Josh Holat said:

5 million iBooks sold in 65 days. Success? Check.

5:09 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iBooks getting updated already. I haven’t used it much, so I’m not sure what’s wrong there.

5:09 pm Josh Holat said:

“A friend of mine wrote this, and he sent me an email and he said I could use it. I earned more in the first day of selling Elements than I did in the past 5 years of Google ads on periodictable.com” – Is this where the iAd plug comes in?

5:07 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Showing off iPad apps now. Intellivision Lives! better be in there.

5:07 pm Josh Holat said:

8,500 native iPad apps in the store now. Small in comparison to the 200,000+ total applications available.

5:06 pm Josh Holat said:

An iPad sold every 3 seconds. That’s a success if you ask me.

5:06 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Video of international iPad launch. Typical start.

5:05 pm Josh Holat said:

Great, now all we need is someone to propose with a digital ring on an iPad… or did that already happen?

5:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Joke about men finding love through the iPad. Wouldn’t have helped me, I’m guessing.

5:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

iPad starts us out.

5:03 pm Kirk Hiner said:

people are here from 57 countries. I didn’t know there were 57 countries.

5:03 pm Josh Holat said:

“We apologize to folks who couldn’t be here… this is the biggest place we can get, so… anyway.” Possible poke at Gizmodo, as they weren’t invited this year.

5:02 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Talk of selling out, size of event, etc.

5:01 pm Kirk Hiner said:

STanding ovation for Steve.

5:01 pm Josh Holat said:

Lights are dimming. Expect Steve any second now…

5:00 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Here we go.

4:59 pm Kirk Hiner said:

What a Wonderful World? Odd.

4:57 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Turn off your iPhones.

4:55 pm Josh Holat said:

Under five minutes ’til go time.

4:53 pm Kirk Hiner said:

On both counts.

4:53 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Agreed.

4:53 pm Josh Holat said:

Hopefully he’ll bring back the “One more thing…” in this year’s keynote. I’ve missed it the past couple of times.

4:50 pm Josh Holat said:

It’s good to know that Steve Jobs will be giving his keynote in a much healthier state than year’s past.

4:47 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The Apple Store is still not down. Is that odd? I can’t recall how close to the event they usually stop selling products.

4:46 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I wonder if John Mayer has been able to find work since Apple no longer forces him on us at their media events.

4:45 pm Kirk Hiner said:

15 minutes away. Beginning the finger stretches.

4:28 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Another rumor has trickled in. A fun one. Will we see the final Get a Mac ad, and will it be based on current events?

4:17 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Less than an hour to go. Even with all the leaks, I’m still excited to see what surprises Apple has in store for us.

1:01 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The leaks keep coming in. I’m VERY interested in this one: Apples Magic Trackpad leaked before WWDC.

11:06 am Kirk Hiner said:

And here’s a Safari 5 rumor we hadn’t written up before posting our WWDC 2010 rumor roundup.

10:27 am Kirk Hiner said:

Good morning, everyone. I trust you’re all ready for the big announcements today. Me? I’ve got to call AT&T and get on that cheaper data plan.

  1. Morning Kirk. Impatiently waiting UK resident Apple nut here. A pre-keynote "thanks" for keeping us up to speed :)

Can't wait to see an official announcement of the new iPhone.

    Barry
  2. AT&T kindly moved up when I can get a new iPhone, so I am locked and loaded, woo! Anyone else get an 8 month boost?

    JG Mason
  3. I can get a standard upgrade on 7/12/10.
I am Looking foreword to it.

    David Jackson
  4. No boost here, but I didn't need one. The good news is that this will be the first iPhone update I'll actually get to use instead of hand off to my wife due to oddities with the two-year upgrade restrictions. I'm still not sure how she, Apple and AT&T managed to confuse that issue so much that I was never able to understand why I couldn't upgrade my iPhone instead of hers.

    Kirk Hiner
  5. Trackpads! Pah!!! I want an official touchscreen Macbook, with a new OS merging Snow Leopard and iPad OS! Trackpads are SO old hat lol

    Barry
  6. What is this cheap data plan? I did move my ipad up to the unlimited plan.

    George
  7. Here you go, George:

    <a href="AT&T" rel="nofollow">http://www.appletell.com/apple/comment/new-att-iPhone-data-plans/">AT&T adjusts data plan offerings

    Kirk Hiner
  8. Thanks Kirk.

    George
  9. I'm wondering how fast Kirk is driving… The time stamps on his posts seem to be heading into the future at an alarming rate. While I may be totally ignorant here… I do believe the event is in the Pacific timezone. I assume Kirk is attending the event at the designated location. I am about 99% sure that it is still only ~9:52 AM here in California. Meanwhile, Kirk is posting at lunchtime today, while I'm still eating breakfast. I knew Appletell was awesome, I didn't realize the editors had actually created a Flux capacitor for their own personal use. Maybe they "found" it at a bar…

    Bob
  10. Don't let our secret out, Bob. How can we time travel to learn about announcements before they happen if you're going to tip off Apple?!
