Upon its release this week, users began to report some iPhone 4 issues, such as screen discoloration and reception problems. Now that the iPhone has been out for a little bit longer and thousands more users have gotten access to it, more information has developed about these issues.
Regarding screen discoloration, there are reports that this may simply be due to a binding agent that didn’t have time to dry before shipping the product. According to an AppleInsider forums user who pitched this adhesive to Apple:
Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow ‘blotches’ will disappear.
If you’ve been experiencing this issue, sit tight. It may alleviate itself within the week. If not, be sure to head to the Genius Bar and see what they can do for you. Of course, if you’re seeking a replacement, it could certainly be a while.
The other issue—the loss of reception while holding the iPhone in a way that blocks the lower left corner—also may have a relatively straightforward fix, according to Steve Jobs. Apparently, when a concerned customer emailed Steve wondering if this was a design flaw, he responded with, “Nope. Just don’t hold it that way.” Sweet and to the point like usual. Simply placing a case such as Apple’s $30 bumpers or any other case may also fix this issue.
Last but not least is the fact that the back glass panel on the iPhone can attract scratches. Yeah, and so could all the other models of the iPhone. Just be careful, people; that’s all it takes to fix this one.
