Since its initial unveiling earlier this year, iOS 4 has been picked apart feature by feature. One feature that seems to slip under the radar most of the time—aptly named iPod Out—allows all devices that can run iOS 4 to display an iPod interface on the external display of the device to which it is connected. This has not been a commonly used feature because, let’s face it, what do you connect your iPod or iPhone to that has an external display?

BMW says you will do so with their cars.

BMW automobiles have seen longtime iPod integration, but always through the default interface of the onboard computer system. Future models, however, will not subject loyal Apple and BMW consumers to poor interface design. Additionally, BMW’s own designers and engineers will no longer have to worry about updating their interfaces when Apple announces new features, since Apple will update everything themselves.

Starting, presumably, with the next revision of the BMW and Mini lines, iPod Out will be present. The interface will not be the one found in the iOS iPod app, but rather the one found in the iPod classic—a simple, if old, text-based menu. We hope that the menu system can be adequately controlled with BMW’s iDrive controller, since the interface has been navigated for years through the once- and still-ubiquitous click wheel. Regardless, BMW owners will be able to flip through their music, playlists, Genius mixes and podcasts while keeping attention focused on the road.
