How FaceTime will work on iPod touch

FaceTime with email

So you’ve heard the rumors about the iPod touch getting a front facing camera for FaceTime, but how’s that going to work without a phone number? The answer is simple, e-mail.

According to one of The Boy Genious’ trusted sources, FaceTime on non-cellular devices will be identified via e-mail addresses instead of cell phone numbers. Obviously, this is all still rumor since there isn’t an iPod touch with a front facing camera, nor is FaceTime available on Mac.

Let’s just assume for a second that iPod touch will be getting those cameras, as well as a future version of the iPad. Okay, good. So, here’s how it works. You enable FaceTime on your future iDevice and enter an e-mail address. Other FaceTime users should be able to initiate a video call with you via this email address. You receive a FaceTime call on an iPod touch via Push Notification. So it’s not exactly the same as on iPhone. Oh, and there aren’t really any details concerning FaceTime from an iPod touch to an iPhone. Currently, you’d have to know that person’s phone number. I’d expect Apple to allow iPhone users to also register an email address with their iPhone’s FaceTime settings to have similar functionality. Apple may even implement something like an Apple ID.

But until Apple announces either an iPod touch or iPad with cameras or iChat FaceTime functionality, we’ll just have to wait and see.
