Time to update your apps again; the Skype update for iOS 4 multitasking is now live. Now you can not only make calls over 3G with an iPhone, you can receive them while using other apps.
After launching Skype and logging in, you’ll be able to make calls and leave the app while still talking, just like expected. What you might not have expected is that you can also receive calls in the background as long as you’re still logged in. If you receive a call while in another app, you’ll see a popup notification like the one pictured at right. After you’ve accepted or initiated a call and left the main Skype app, the call appears just like a regular phone call; as a red bar across the top of the screen.
Skype’s official updated features list cites multitasking as the only update for version 2.0.1. After downloading the app on my iPhone 4, it seems there are more updates than are listed. The app seems to be sporting a higher resolution icon, looks to be taking advantage of the Retina display, and is utilizing fast app switching. Unfortunately, multitasking is available for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 only. There’s no support for iPod touch, which seems very strange. There also isn’t any support for video conferencing. But this is still a huge update, one that you’ll definitely want to get now.
