Since users first experienced the shortcomings of AT&T, there has always been talk of Apple bringing the iPhone to a secondary carrier in the United States. In recent weeks, signs have begun to point to a version of the iPhone soon being available on Verizon. Now, John Gruber (who else, right?) has word that the CDMA iPhone is nearing the production stage.

This version of the iPhone—apparently internally codenamed N92—may not be a sure thing, Gruber says, but recent evidence seems to indicate it is. What’s more is that the CDMA iPhone is supposedly already in the EVT (engineering verification test). This is one step lower than the DVT (device verification test) stage the infamous stolen iPhone was in when it was bought by Gizmodo. If the rumors of the world seeing a CDMA iPhone out on Verizon in January of 2011 are indeed true, and the demand for the iPhone remains extremely high, it would seem Apple is right on track to soon begin producing the device in mass quantities.

While we’re still unsure if there in fact is a deal between Apple and Verizon, (Gruber says the CDMA iPhone could launch on any CDMA-based carrier, be it Sprint or one overseas), it seems this rumor may have a significant amount of truth behind it.
