When Twitter decided they needed an official iPhone client for their microblogging platform, they didn’t start from scratch: they bought one of the best apps that already existed: Tweetie. How does the free third version from Twitter match up to the paid version? Did they add amazing new features, or did they dumb it down to make is more “accessible?”
What is it
Twitter, for those of you who weren’t aware that WWII is over, is an SMS-based microblog where all your posts can only be 140 characters long. Twitter for iPhone is the official client, which allows your iPhone/iPod touch to register and post, as well as follow other people.
How does it work?
In addition to posting, Twitter for iPhone lets you search (and save searches to view later as posts update), create and store hashtags (designating the subject of a post, like an election or the movie your watching), and if you’re not connected to the internet, save posts as “drafts” You can also post pictures you have in your photo library (or take them with the iPhone camera), and view links and pictures other people have posted. It also supports URL shrinking and can, via Javascript tweaks, post links from Safari, as well as “geotagging” posts with your location.
Is it contagious?
Twitter is hella contagious. It’s one of those things that I made constant fun of until I started doing it, now I’m completely addicted. Tweetie was my Twitter client of choice (having tried several free apps) back when it was $3, and now that it’s Twitter for iPhone, it still has all the old charms (such as the “pull to refresh” option that’s now being used by Facebook).
The only thing I don’t like about it is that if you Quote a Retweet (repost someone else’s tweet with your own additions) it puts quotations marks around the tweet, eating up valuable characters.

I've noticed this app provides terribly innaccurate information on my profile, wrong numbers for tweets, followers, etc. Works great for me in every other aspect, though.
