iPhone Santa ClausIt’s December, and the countdown to Christmas as officially begun. So has the release of Christmas-themed apps. There will be countless others of course, and we’ll be taking a closer look at some of the best throughout this month. In the meantime, as new Christmas apps and accessories are announced and old apps are updated—whether they’re games, greeting card generators, novelties or more—we’ll announce them here.

Apps

  • New – Just over one week before Christmas, Jackson Klein, a first-time iPhone app developer, launched his first app in the iTunes App Store. At that point, the recent college graduate could not have known the comic or painful impact that the mobile software would have on thousands of Christmas celebrations or the substantial revenue that it would generate. At $.99 in the App Store, the app received over 14,000 purchases in its first 5 days and has gathered a cult-like following in social media channels and YouTube – including the now viral: “Santa Alarm app destroys family’s Christmas tree and gifts”.
  • New – XiMAD studios has announced the release of two new BooksAlive titles just in time for the upcoming winter holidays. Created specifically for the iPad, Twas The Night Before Christmas HD, and The Twelve Days of Christmas HD are both Christmas themed interactive stories books geared toward children. Both of these titles were developed to bring the timeless joy of these classic Christmas Stories vibrantly to life so that they may be enthusiastically enjoyed by young audiences.
  • New – anxer has announced iSantaMe 2.0, their camera app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Fun and easy to use, iSantaMe allows anyone to add Santa caps, speech bubbles, Christmas and New Years wishes to individuals in photos. Use either a stored photo or to take a photo with the iPhone/iPod touch camera. iSantaMe comes with six different santa caps, four speech bubbles and ten Christmas and New Year image wishes. User creations can be stored in the photo library or shared via email.
  • New – iNimated.com has announced Animated Christmas Cards 1.1, their smart e-card sender for iOS devices. Animated Christmas Cards features a selection of beautifully animated, moving email templates. All are animated in realtime right in the recipient’s mail viewer, with stunning graphical effects with transparency and shadows. Dancing Christmas symbols moving to the rhythm of beautiful music, swinging semi-transparent Christmas balls, hundreds of moving stars and lights and more.
  • New – Alice Dev Team announces Christmas Gift 1.0 for all Apple mobile devices running on iOS 4.0 or later. Created to provide users with a quick and fun way of making digital holiday cards directly from their mobile devices, Christmas Gift is the perfect winter accessory for any frosty holiday, from Christmas to Valentine’s Day. The app’s graphic editing tools and pre-designed picture frames let users transform simple photos of themselves into dynamic and colorful cards and more.
  • New – Logic Consulting LLC has announced The Night Before Christmas – A visit from St. Nicholas for iPad. It combines the 1912 Classic poem by Clement C. Moore with re-mastered original illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith. The story has been updated for the iPad with interactive elements and animations. Children can choose either to read to themselves or play the incredible narration and read along at the same time.
  • NewCake Break has launched a special edition of their first app, What Flower. The Christmas edition was created for the winter holiday season, and it proposes a series of flowers and arrangements for those who feel overwhelmed by the task of putting together a bouquet by themselves.
  • New – Lx Apps has announced Magic Xmas 1.1 for iPad, iPhone and iPod. Magic Xmas is an interactive set of Christmas trees and fireplace environments. It transform your device in one interactive frame of Christmas trees with bright and blinking lights and a relaxing burning fireplace. Touch on the center of the screen to change the lights cycle and on the borders to change the colors of the trees and the lights and rotate the device to change to the fireplace view.
  • New – Mobz technologies has anounces the update of their two xmas voice transformers SantaVoice and ElfVoice. Both voice transformers have been updated with a completely new and faster version of the sophisticated dirac pitch shift engine. SantaVoice is a must have gadget for this xmas season. It will let you record your voice and transform it to a funny lower Santa pitch. ElfVoice will do the oposite and transform your voice to a higher pitch.
  • HappyTime for iPhone is a simple amusement, which makes the festive atmosphere deeper and more joyful, reminding of the soon coming of these magic holidays. The developers created this application to always get useful and actual time and weather data presented in a handy and nice-looking way. At any moment you will know how long you have to wait for your gifts and how much time you have for all the preparations, and you’ll never miss the coming of this wonderful event.
  • AppyMob has announced AppyChristmas, a free app that allows you to take pictures and edit them against funny, Xmas-themed backgrounds. Plus, it has a sharing option to send the pic to your Facebook, or via email. It’s cheezy fun for kids, family, work colleagues, or anyone to play around with.
  • Just before the holidays, Ultim8Soft has announced Christmas Greetings 1.1, an Universal iPhone and iPad app considered the first of its kind, with 217 handpicked greeting messages for the holidays. Users of Christmas Greetings can send any of those greetings via SMS and email, post to twitter and post to Facebook wall. Users can also save their favorite greetings to easily access them later.
  • Nanoschool Kids has announces Reindeers! 1.0, their highly awaited holiday iPad interactive storybook and sticker app. Designed just for the iPad, Reindeers! is a game that features moveable stickers, animation, beautifully illustrated pages, holiday music and a complete story narration with sound effects. Kids can enjoy the jazzy reindeer storybook or choose to decorate their favorite reindeer, while parents dream of making their own app creation after they find the Wish Elf to click on.
  • Gamez 4 Touch has released Musical Lights HD for iPad in the App Store, when family and friends compete for the best outdoor light shows. Musical Lights is a unique virtual light display. Users create scenes in the app by choosing a photo, adding lights, then adding music to the finished display. The display responds in time to the music when the power switch is flipped. Completed designs can be sent to friends from within the app.
  • Innovative art publishing group, Kerubin has announced Decorate Christmas Tree 1.1, their addictive and free app for iPad and iPhone. Simple to use and carefully designed, the app includes a tree, differently shaped decorations, a variety of colors that can be applied to each decoration and any size for individual decorations. Creations can be sent by E-mail, shared with friends on Facebook or saved to Photo Album on iPad, iPhone or iPod.
  • Kumquat has announced Villancicos Navidenos. Created to offer users a Spanish language alternative to conventional Christmas themed apps, Villancicos Navidenos offers users of any age a chance to experience a wealth of classic Christmas Carols sung in Spanish right from their mobile device. Each carol is accompanied by beautifully rendered original artwork as well as Spanish text to help users follow along with the apps vocal presentation of each song.
  • AppThem has announced that Appy Holiday 1.7, an innovative Christmas greeting app for iOS devices, will offer users the capability of “Dancing with the Czar”. With Appy Holiday, users can create a custom app with his or her picture and turn the picture into an interactive Santa Clause that can be touched, dragged, and flicked on an iPhone. With release 1.7, user can pick pictures of community submitted top Czars and turn them into interactive Santas too.
  • Best selling author Chuck Fischer has announced The Holiday Snow Globe 1.0, his free interactive snow globe app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Enjoy Christmas on your iPhone or iPad with falling snow and beautiful hand-painted backgrounds by world-renowned artist and author.   • The fun photo decoration app Pimpy comes with a cool Xmas update: drop price to free, 50 beautiful Christmas stickers and for more fun, with a cool photo contest. Now to add more excitement to your photo shooting habits, you can look forward to the Xmas Photo Contest. The reward – an artistic iPhone case printed by Zazzle store for the wackiest and most hilarious photo decorated using the amazing features of this application.
  • With Facecard Christmas Edition you can put Christmas stickers on any face without having to move or resize the items. You don’t even have to set face points. Facecard will do it all for you automatically.
  • On5 has just released a very cool universal app for iOS: it’s Xmas Time. Basically, it’s a video clock in which a nice girl draws a clock personally for you.
  • Best selling author Chuck Fischer has announced Clement Clarke Moore’s Twas The Night Before Christmas 1.1, his new interactive app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Brilliant hand-painted images surprise, engage, and delight with the touch of your finger. Magnificent animation and sound effects, combined with celebrity actor, Victor Garber’s magnificent narration, will fill you with spirit of Christmas throughout the year.
  • This Christmas, be charmed by a classic: an enchanting iPad adaptation of the timeless poem “Twas The Night Before Christmas.” This classic tale has been brought to life through a new animated book experience. The beautiful, original 1912 illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith have been cleverly and painstakingly animated bringing 21st Century life to this classic poem for children and adults alike. The original typography has also been maintained.
  • Punflay will be releasing three new educational iPad apps for the holidays; 12 Days to Christmas, Jerricho the Elf and My Story Time. All these apps have been designed for children four years and older. 12 Days to Christmas comes with 12 different stories and activities. My Story Time lets kids create simple stories or messages using beautiful holiday pictures and words. Jerricho the Elf is an interactive activity book. 12 Days to Christmas, in fact, just hit the stores today.
  • Appdicted has announced Holiday Hatter 1.2 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Holiday Hatter gives users a way to add Santa hats to individuals in photos. The app offers over 30 different holiday hats, including Christmas and New Years styles. Users can add unlimited hats to a single photo. The final photo can then be saved, used for Christmas cards, profile photos or other fun ideas. It can also be shared via Facebook, Twitter, or emailed directly from the app.
  • Oceanhouse Media has announced a new licensing partnership with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Two books from the best-selling series, Tacky the Penguin and, in time for the holidays, Tacky’s Christmas, are now available for the special introductory price of $2.99, with many more coming soon. (This is OM’s 7th holiday app of the season.) Tacky the Penguin is beloved by children and adults alike for his lovably goofy antics and unintended but good-natured propensity to cause mayhem. Publishers Weekly calls him “must reading for any kid or grown-up who refuses to follow the pack.” In edition, also just released, Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree is available for $3.99.
  • JBMJBM, LLC has announced the release of their highly anticipated Santa Video iPhone app.The Santa Video app actually takes an image you supply and overlays any 1 of the 16 included videos of Santa onto your image. Put Santa in front of your own house, in front of your own fireplace, and best of all in front of your own Christmas Tree. Adults can enjoy this too. There are several adult humored videos that are truly knock-your-stockings-off hilarious.
  • Just in time for Christmas, dtp young entertainment announces its Just SING! Christmas Songs app is available now on the App Store. The festive karaoke app for iPhone features four of the most popular Christmas songs: “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” “Deck The Halls,” “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bells.” Simply warm up your vocal chords, grab your iPhone and off you go bringing holiday joy to your friends and family. Players receive immediate feedback on their performance and a special noise filter provides a high quality karaoke experience.
  • RogueSheep has announced SnoGlobe 2.0, an update to their holiday-themed app for iOS devices. Users can decorate the globe with their own photos which is filled with delicate snowflakes that react to movement and gravity just like a real snow globe. At any time the scene can be frozen and shared with friends or a loved one using Facebook, Twitter or email. Version 2.0 incorporates Apple’s new iAd technology, brings compatibility with iOS 4.2 and is now free.
  • Mobz Technologies was able to sneak on the north pole express and capture some very nice sounds from Santa’s secret village. They had to hurry before they got discovered and hide themselves in a little office. They were kicked out by the Elf Police and got a bad notice on Santa’s list. But luckily they still got everything recorded. They have put some of these sounds in a free iPhone edition of iSoundGrid. The rest of the sounds are in the iPad edition.

  • Barcode Hero for iPhone and iPod touch has a new feature that is sure to shake things up this Christmas. For the first time, children can use their parents’ iPhone or iPod to create a wish list of what they want and then send it—along with a personal photo—directly to Santa Claus and his elves. The Holiday Wish List feature is automagically included in the most recent Barcode Hero update.
  • The Snow Globes 3D! iPad children’s book masterfully combines world-class animation with physics-based snow simulation to create a magical storytime experience. Viewable in both standard 2D and stereoscopic eye-popping 3D, the delightful holiday-themed illustrations come to life with interactive touch spots and snowflakes that move in response to the tilt of the iPad screen.
  • The magic of Christmas is captured in more ways than one in Wet Nose Design’s brand new iPhone application, Elf Cam. Designed by Engineer Elves at the North Pole’s Connected Christmas Company, Elf Cam allows users to record night-vision video footage of Santa Claus climbing down the chimney in their own living room.
  • Fungamental Labs has introduced the Christmas edition of the Star Teeth iPhone application. Every day parents and children have this small fight. In the bathroom. While brushing their teeth. Parents would love their children to keep their teeth healthy but how can you motivate your kids to brush their teeth properly? Our graphically attractive solution will turn this not particularly amusing activity into a lively adventure. Children can choose their “buddy” from a set of characters who will teach them how to brush their teeth properly and how long for, using the rhythm of a song. And now the set of buddies was supplemented by Santa Claus, Rudolph, Snowman, Christmas elf, Gingerbread man and Angel.
  • StarMaker has announced Auto-Tuning Christmas songs. Launched yesterday, the Auto-Tune Christmas app for iPhone lets users record themselves singing along to one of twelve Christmas songs, Auto-Tune their voice, and share their recordings with friends. The app is free to download. Six of the songs as well as the Unlimited Sharing feature are $0.99.
  • Appdicted, LLC has released My Snowman 1.0 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users. A newly launched product, My Snowman gives users a way to create virtual snowmen characters. The app offers over 100 different snowman parts, including bodies, eyes, noses, mouths, arms and accessories. Users combine these parts on a background photo of their choice, to make a great looking snowman picture. Put a snowman in your family photos or even add snowman parts to a photo of yourself.
  • A new iPhone app has been created which solves the biggest problem that almost everyone faces at Christmas: what to buy people. Christmas Wrapped is the first app of its kind to generate tailor made gift suggestions for loved ones. The app factors in budget, age and gender to suggest the very best possible gifts. No more socks for Dad, or vouchers for Mum. As well as generating gift ideas it helps you get organised by assigning gifts to your contacts, and automatically creates a handy shopping list of things to buy. The app can even forecast how much youʼll spend this Christmas based on your budget—not for the faint hearted.
  • My Black Dog Books has announced Violet’s The Night Before Christmas 1.1, their third book for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Violet’s The Night Before Christmas is a children’s book with an intriguing story line that includes animations and interactions on every page of the book. The book also includes a Read-to-Me function as well as the ability to choose from three holiday songs as background music as the reader navigates through the book using left and right page turn buttons.
  • So Ouat and BulkyPix have announced the immediate availability of two classic books, Christmas Eve and Ali Baba and the Fourty Thieves Classics at the App Store. Specifically adapted for children ages 2 to 10, the interactive books are designed as a learning tool that will get your youngsters interested in reading right from the start.
  • NiftyGifts Christmas Present Tracker by Philweb is a handy tool that helps you keep track of the Christmas presents you’ve bought or wish to buy for your friends and family. You are able to manage budgets and see presents still to buy at-a-glance within the neat Shopping List feature. You can create multiple recipients, set them budgets and assign them gifts. Each gift has a name, price, status and if you’re an iPhone user it also lets you use the camera to take a quick snap.
  • Go Forth Apps has released Sweater Booth – Christmas Cheer Maker for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Sweater Booth allows users to “paint” tacky christmas sweaters on people in their photos. By choosing a fabric type and corresponding pattern there are dozens of sweater combinations possible. Once the sweater is “painted” the user can try different sweaters with a touch of a single button. Selected by Apple as “New & Noteworthy” in the Entertainment Category.
  • Loud Crow Interactive has announced PopOut! The Night Before Christmas, its latest release of the PopOut! series of interactive digital books for iOS devices. Based on the 1902 book by William Wallace Denslow, PopOut! The Night Before Christmas combines original text and illustrations with rich interactivity to create an authentic yet modern reading experience. It features uniquely interactive elements such as pull-tabs, spin-wheels, spring-mounted elements, and more.

  • Christmas Greeting – After the Beep! is a promotional holiday version of After the Beep! There is a link to After the Beep! in the app; other than that, there are no ads and the developer does not advertise in messages. Christmas Greeting lets you record a voice message, then easily customize it by mixing and matching 15 background holiday tunes, 11 locations (like Santa’s Slay, Christmas Party and Heaven) and 17 greeting wrappers (like the printed text on a Christmas Card). Once you’ve recorded your message you can quickly send it directly to any U.S. voicemail without ringing the phone (a process the developers call VoiceTxt), or share it on Facebook, Twitter and through email.
  • Goodzer launched their iPhone app, giving NYC shoppers an edge this holiday season. Goodzer’s (a unique online-to-offline search service) initial launch will cover more than 95% of all brick-and-mortar stores in the five boroughs of New York City. Goodzer users can instantly search these 15,000 stores to locate any consumer product imaginable, from iPads to antique jewelry. Search results display product pricing, real-time in-stock status, and distance to the retailer through full integration with Google’s Maps and Street View. Goodzer.com was just launched Nov. 23rd.
  • The Postcards From Santa app is aimed at making special Christmas memories for children across the globe. The app was built to help people into the holiday spirit and build the anticipation for Christmas by sending a customized postcard from Santa to someone special.
  • Light Year Software has announced Christmas Light Finder 1.0, a new app for iOS devices that makes it easy to find and preview nearby Christmas light displays. Christmas Lights Finder shows where to go, a preview of what’s there and community ratings to avoid over-hyped expectations. The app determines the user’s location and queries a central database for nearby light displays. They are shown on a map using light bulb markers, colored to indicate the average rating.
  • Outfit7 has announced the release of Talking Santa, a holiday-themed entertainment app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, just in time for the Christmas Season. Talking Santa is joined by the best-selling lovable characters from Outfit7’s Talking Friends collection, downloaded over 30 million times, to help ring in the most magical time of year. Users can create and share joyous 3D claymation greetings that will warm the heart of everyone on their wish-lists!
  • Hot Chili Apps is expanding their Christmas Card Edition. Christmas C@rds HD 1.0 are e-cards. The app allows anyone to design on the iPad in HD quality and in a complete new look, with a choice of various graphic elements for designing his own Christmas card to his individual taste. 36 brilliant C@rd templates are available in HD. They can be decorated on the iPad with personal photos or texts as well as one from 18 stickers.
  • Riptide Games has announced iLookChristmas 1.4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch devices. iLookChristmas is a free app that lets users add a holiday theme to any of their photos. Users can turn anyone in their pictures into Santa, Elves, Reindeer or snowman in addition to many other items available to make their photos more festive. Completed pictures can then be shared with family via Facebook, Twitter, email or saved to the device photo album for later.
  • i-Itch Inc has announced their Holiday update to Let’s Bead Friends, the popular app for iOS. Let’s Bead Friends allows users to create charming friendship bracelets with a personalized message. Added are brilliant Christmas, Hanukkah, and winter themed designs that will enable you to send Holiday Greetings with ease. The artisan may apply color and/or design to the bead shape chosen.
  • Viaden Mobile has introduced Christmas Shopping: Save your Money 1.0, their new bargain-seeking and penny-saving tool for iPhone and iPod touch devices. Released in anticipation of Black Friday and Christmas bargain hunt, this application will help experienced shoppers as well as neophytes literally find a sure way to their best buys this holiday season.   • Moving Tales has released Twas the Night Before Christmas, a full colour, 3D animated Christmas special App of the classic American Christmas poem. Enjoy lovingly detailed three dimensional characters including St Nicholas, the Father, sleeping children, reindeer and mice; a stunning hybrid style of animation combining line work, textures and 3D animation. This innovative and richly detailed animated app presents the classic poem as you have never seen it.
  • Pairing wines with personalities for gift shoppers? There’s an app for that (and a web site). This holiday season, anyone can tap into Natalie MacLean’s expertise via her free web site and mobile app for iPhone. They help consumers with a whole new type of pairing: wine with the people on your Christmas shopping list. The app and site also pair wines to thousands of dishes, including holiday favorites, such as turkey, goose, duck, and even partridge in a pear tree.
  • Holiday decorating experts Kathy Harrison and Becky McCraney announce Show Me Decorating 1.2, for iOS. Follow their step-by-step instructions for holiday home decorating to create classic and festive home decor, or peruse “recipes” for holiday trees. Show Me Decorating is all about creating beautiful holidays for everyone to enjoy. Each selection comes with a recommended shopping list for ribbon, balls, floral, and ornaments in quantities determined by the size of the user’s tree.
  • Barcode Hero 2.0 has launched, just in time for the holidays. A next generation shopping app, Barcode Hero is far more valuable than just a price comparison tool. It lets shoppers research products they are thinking about purchasing, gathering comments from friends and experts on those products and alternate products before they buy. Users become part of a community, scanning the barcode of products they like and adding their comments, which can be passed along to friends over Facebook and Twitter. Those that really become engaged can become the “king” or the acknowledged expert in a category.

  • BCNmultimedia has announced Children’s Christmas 1.0, an Advent Calendar free app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Children’s Christmas is an Advent calendar for children of all ages. Starting on the 1st December, kids will be able to open the corresponding window every day until Christmas day. In every window you will find an illustration about a moment in the gospels on the Annunciation and the Birth of Jesus with a text and a quotation from the Bible.
  • TinyDesires.com has announced the release of XmasWish application for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.   • IconsBerlin has extended its icon collection with new tab bar icons for iPhone apps with Christmas motifs.
