AirPlay Apps

Seems that Steve Jobs has confirmed through another of his famous email correspondences that AirPlay will be a feature present in Safari and available to developers for use in apps sometime next year. This would allow you to stream videos from or other video content from third party apps straight to your Apple TV. Yes, you should be excited.

Here’s the text from the email pictured above:

Q: Hi, I recently updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad to 4.2. I think my favourite feature is airplay. This is seriously amazing and makes sharing content seamless. I just purchased Apple TV and was wondering are you ever going to make airplay video work for videos in safari and 3rd party apps? I hope to get a response. :)

A: Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.

Steve is known for short replies to lengthy questions like the one above. I’m not saying this one is definitely real, but it’s not unlikely. AirPlay is a great feature and a large reason why many consumers would consider purchasing an Apple TV. So, it would make sense for Apple to pursue the feature and make it more functional.

But do we really have to stop at just video? Wouldn’t it be amazing to play a game streamed sans wires from an iPhone to your TV? This email doesn’t necessarily cover that, but hey, we can hope.
