Absinthe A5The time has finally come; an untethered jailbreak is now available for both A5 iDevices: the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S! Thanks to the efforts of iOS hacker pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team, this untethered jailbreak comes through a new tool that goes by the name of “Absinthe A5″, based off the team’s popular Greenpois0n software. This is quite a significant release as it marks the first time that an untethered jailbreak has been released for both the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, and the first time the iPhone 4S has been jailbroken altogether.

Absinthe A5 is unfortunately only available on OS X right now, although the Chronic Dev Team assures us that Windows and Linux versions are in the works. This untethered jailbreak supports the iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1 (build 9A405) and the iPhone 4S on iOS 5 (build 9A334) and iOs 5.0.1 (builds 9A405 and 9A406). The jailbreak process is remarkably user-friendly, and shouldn’t cause the average user any issues, but those that are completely new to the jailbreaking world should get familiar with what they’re getting themselves into before going any further.

The iPhone Dev Team will also be releasing their own tool for the untethered A5 iDevice jailbreak, which will include a command-line tool that gives users more control over certain aspects of the jailbreak. For now, if you’re running OS X and don’t wish to wait any longer, grab yourself a copy of Absinthe A5 and begin enjoying the world of unofficial third-party software!
