Parallels Desktop is one of the most innovative applications out there on the Mac. It allows new switchers and seasoned users alike to use Windows applications on a Mac without the need to reboot. To my delight, the Parallels team announced a new version with 3D graphics support earlier today.
Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to the performance, but from the screenshot below, it looks like the game was played on fairly low settings. I think this is to be expected due to the overheads involved with virtualization. Still, I’m really looking forward to this release, because I’ll no longer have to boot into Windows to enjoy my games. Above is a screenshot of Quake 4 running in Parallels.
Parallels 3.0 also comes with 50+ new features and 100+ bug fixes. The final release should be ready in several weeks, and will retail at a regular price of $79.99 or $49.99 for an upgrade. Pre-order the upgrade now to save an additional $10.
