Is Safari for Windows insecure or just Beta?

With the recent release of Safari 3 for Mac and Windows, a lot is being made of just how many bugs are being found in the Windows version and just how insecure it really is. Within hours we had reports of at least 8 bugs that were found with a possible 3 that would allow a complete take over of the affected PC.

Danish researcher Thor Larholm wrapped up Safari’s opening day with the most damaging disclosure of all: a remote execution vulnerability accompanied by proof-of-concept exploit code. That code — Windows Safari users can click here for a demo — could be used to hijack the PC, said Larholm, who plucked the vulnerability from the browser and built the exploit in just two hours.

So with the potential of a hijacked PC coming from Safari 3 should we simply hold off on running Safari on Windows for a while, at least until a stable more secure version will be available. Personally the idea of Safari for Windows is just a bit strange, but I suppose I felt the same way when the PC version of iTunes was first made available. In the mean time we have to remember that this is Apple’s first venture with a Windows browser and perhaps most important, Safari 3 is still in Beta.
