According to Reg Hardware, Apple will be announcing a 3G model of the iPhone specifically for European customers. This new model is supposedly part of a joint promotion with Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany and Carphone Warehouse. The deal with three carriers gives the consumer much more choice, instead of being locked into a single carrier that can do whatever it wants. Yes AT&T, we’re looking at you.
I honestly don’t think it’s going to happen, at least not just the week after the U.S. launch. If true, it will certainly disappoint a lot of the new owners (the current iPhone runs on an EDGE, which is slower than 3G). Vodafone currently has an under-utilised 3G network, so European users should have access to faster speeds while surfing the internet on their iPhones.
The shipment date is still unknown, but is supposedly due before the end of the year as predicted at MacWorld 2007 by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
