Collect what it takes to summon monsters, pit them against one another, and dominate the legendary Montowers. That’s the idea behind Buffstone’s recently launched MonTowers, and it’s an addictive addition to the iTunes App Store.
What is it?
Welcome to the lab. If you get as addicted to this game as I have, it may as well be your second home. It’s inhabited by you—the mad scientist magician—and your assistant. She’s a pretty monster of indeterminate species, humanoid, and blessed with a fit figure. While she makes great eye-candy, she’s even better at schooling you in the how-tos of monster acquisition and training.

She’ll walk you through each step in tutorials, and you’ll be more than ready to begin your conquest of the MonTowers, taming each champion in order to summon your own variant of its species. The monsters you summon and train will aid you in defeating the beasts that lurk at each level of the MonTowers, furthering your power and reputation and enlarging your own collection.
How does it work?
MonTowers plays like a text-based digital collectible card game with a few added bonuses. First, the presentation is far superior to CCGs; and second, the interactive aspects of the game put CCGs in the dust. There’s even an interactive element in the combat mode. Yes, stats obviously matter, but you can greatly enhance your chances of winning against a champion if you master making critical hits. It’s not difficult to do so—tap the indicator when in the appropriate area of the status bar—but this seemingly small detail does double duty in engaging the player.

Is it contagious?
MonTowers is a pretty straightforward take on collect ‘em and kill ‘em, so what makes it so incredibly irresistible and so impossible to put down? It’s hard to define the magic that makes it possible for a game like this to get its claws into you. But in this case I think it’s a combination of polish and pacing.
First, the polish. The design direction is consistent and well-executed, the mechanics of the game have been thoroughly thought through, and there’s clear attention to detail on display in every aspect of the game. This sort of quality should be commonplace in the gameworld, but the sad fact is that beta-quality games make it into the App Store daily.
Second, the pacing. Games that have time constraints on point or currency refreshes need to have tightly designed pacing to keep the player seeking without undue frustration. MonTowers is flawless in this regard.
The graphics are very nice, especially considering this is a basically a menu-based form of gameplay. Hundreds of monsters to collect, each with 3 different looks (because of upgrades) makes for a wild variety of creatures. And the overall UI—side swiping to different areas, for example—is nice and clean.
For only $0.99, there’s really no reason you shouldn’t be downloading MonTowers from the App Store right now!
