iPhone.com sells for more than $1 Million

In an attempt to draw more traffic to it’s brilliant new handset, Apple has reportedly bought iPhone.com for a seven-figure amount. The domain was previously registered to one Michael Kovatch in 1995, who initially planned on cashing in on internet telephony. For several years, the site was home to an online cellphone store known as The Internet Phone Company.
According to Jay Westerdal of Name Intelligence, Kovatch initially turned down Apple’s offer. However, after announcing the iPhone in Jaunary 2007, Apple’s interest in the domain soared. “That domain was so valuable that Apple just had to own it,” Westerdal said in a blog post. “The headaches would have just compounded (the situation) had they not owned the domain.”
The amount at which iPhone.com sold for puts it in the ballpark of other high-profile domains like Business.com and Sex.com
