The good news? Sparrow’s iOS app has been updated to v1.2, and push notifications will finally be coming in a future update. The bad news? Those push notifications are going to be subscription-based, meaning you’ll have to pay for them. This is because Sparrow was unable to obtain status as a VoIP app through Apple, so it will need to offer those push notifications through its own servers. The Sparrow developers originally stated it would not be implementing push notifications due to high costs and security concerns, but it seems they have now changed their mind due to high public demand for the feature.
Regarding the iOS app update, v1.2 of Sparrow for iOS features new message navigation with vertical swiping gestures, the ability to compose messages in landscape mode, more supported languages, and more. Further details on those additions are available on Sparrow’s blog post, which also confirms the future update that will include push notifications.
Jailbreakers, however, are lucky enough to get in on that feature right now with a free tweak in Cydia called Sparrow Push, available through the BigBoss repository.
