I like it when iPhone cases such as the Cubit break the silicon mold. A growing complaint of mine is that too many cases I’ve reviewed over the years end being pretty much the same thing with a different color here, a different texture there. X-Doria’s Cubit, however, introduces a unique feature into iPhone case design, but doesn’t go very far beyond that.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Cubit are the customizable colored squares that immediately call Chiclets to mind, or perhaps bathroom tiling. Pleasant bathroom tiling, I should emphasize.

The back of the Cubit contains 40 open squares into which you can insert TPU cubes of your color choice, sticking with the colors provided, of course (blue, green and orange on the white model, red, black and white on the black model). They’re easy to push in and punch out, but remain solidly in place when in use.

It would be great if X-Doria offered different colored tiles is purchasable sets, but you currently get just what comes with the package.

The case itself is made from shatterproof polycarbonate which clips onto and comes off your iPhone with relative ease. It feels fine to hold (the cubes add a nice texture), but it isn’t the most elegant case I’ve tried. Still, X-Doria gets the design right, with wide openings at the bottom, top and around the volume buttons for easy access. You may even be able to keep your iPhone in the Cubit when docking it, depending upon your device.

My only hesitation with the Cubit, then, is that the ability to customize the cube placement is rather limited, as are the color schemes. As such, you can only kind of personalize it. And compared to the high-end designs available these days, the symmetrical block placement isn’t all that snazzy.

But it is something different, and the Cubit provides solid scratch/scuff protection regardless. If the promotional images included with this review spark your imagination, have at it (combined with a skin, you can leave some blocks open for an interesting effect, for example). But if you’d rather leave the design to the manufacturers, there are many other places to look at this price point.
