NAND Flash

If you’ve wondered how much flash memory Apple uses, you’ll be in for a shock. According to analysts at DRAMeXchange, the electronics giant managed to acquire approximately 25% of worldwide flash memory for use with the iPod and iPhone. Of course, with the law of supply and demand, this will drive prices skywards.

Adding to the problem is the move towards more advanced technology for flash memory production; manufacturers are currently facing lower yields than usual. DRAMeXchange also warns that the industry will experience a flash memory shortage sometime in Q3 2007, which could take several quarters before demand is met with adequate supply.

It looks like the video iPod could be migrating towards a flash-based storage system pretty soon.
