NetMarketShare’s desktop Operating System Market Share metrics for January 2012 show the Mac OS gaining a minuscule three tenths of a point on the month, with Windows falling back slightly. In the Mobile/Tablet category, the iOS was still well out in first place, and recovering some of the ground it gave up in December.

The WinOnX application allows you to run multiple Windows applications in Mac OS X without having to install an additional operating system. The application is based on open source “Wine project,” which enables a direct execution of Windows applications without the need of the actual Windows operating system.

NetMarketShare’s desktop Operating System Market Share metrics for October 2011 show the Mac OS continuing its advance significantly by nearly a half point, Linux up a smidge as well, and Windows off by a little more than half a point, most of which went to Apple’s OS. The NetMarketShare researchers note that Mac usage share generally rises in late summer and fall, this year rising another half-point plus in October to reach 6.45% of worldwide desktop usage.

NetMarketShare’s desktop operating system market share metrics for September 2011 show the Mac OS up significantly by more than a third of a point, Linux up a smidge as well, and Windows off by roughly a third of a point, most of which went to Apple’s OS. In the Mobile/Tablet category, iOS gained another point and a half of share, JavaME was still in second-place but down more than two points, and Android gained just over a quarter point.

Does Windows 8 = Post-PC?

As a prediction, Boy Genius Reports’ Zach Epstein’s views on the potential of Windows 8 are solid. As a declaration, the idea that Windows 8 “ushers in the post-PC era” could use some editing. A conditional verb is needed in there, something along the lines of “might” or “could,” or even “may potentially usher in the post-PC era when it arrives in 18 months, assuming of course that some real neat hardware comes out sans the clunky fans, legacy connectors, and has decent battery life.”

VMWare launches its Fusion 4 software for OS X

VMWare Fusion allows OS X users to run other operating systems as virtual machines without having to resort to other alternatives such as using Apple’s Boot Camp software. The newest VMWare Fusion 4 adds support and optimization for OS X Lion and more than 90 new features.

Operating system and browser market shares for August 2011

For August, 2011, NetMarketShare has changed the way it calculates Operating System Market Share metrics, now separating Desktop and Mobile/Tablet OSs into two discrete categories. This change has of course altered the proverbial landscape considerably, with one consequence being that share percentages for the three significant Desktop OS players have all bumped up significantly from July’s figures.

Parallels Desktop 7 available September 6th

Parallels announced this evening that Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac will be available at retail outlets and online on Tuesday, September 6th, with upgrades for current users available today. The updated version will offer more than 90 new and enhanced features, including OS X Lion integration, performance boosts, and a powerful new Parallels Mobile app and My Parallels services for Apple’s iDevices.

Apple releases iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 to address freezing issues

After numerous reports of freezing issues in iMacs running OS X Lion, Apple responded with its iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 to address this problem. The update weighs in small at only 482KB and requires a user to be running OS X Lion. You can read more about it, as well as download it, from Apple’s support document, or from Software Update instead if you’d prefer.

Boot Camp updated to 3.3

Apple has released Boot Camp Software Update 3.3 for everyone who is running it. Boot Camp enables users to run Windows on an Intel-based Mac. To be able to use the update, you’ll need to be running Boot Camp 3.2 as well as either Win7-32 bit or Win7-64bit.
