Those still running Microsoft Office 2008 on their Macs will be saddened by the news coming from Microsoft this week. The company has announced that starting on April 9th, 2013, it will end all software support for Office 2008 for Macintosh. The news was posted on Microsoft’s blog, noting that Office 2008 has reached the end of its product cycle.

Targeted at support professionals and Apple consultants, this program lets you demonstrate your skills and can offer a career advantage as more Macs find their way into enterprises.
After the trumpeting of BYOD and shouts of “Macs in the Enterprise!” are dying down, the stark reality of how managing these devices is beginning to become an issue for corporate IT departments. Parallels was demoing their latest product—the Parallels Management Suite for SCCM—which lets corporate IT departments discover, configure, and manage Macs using their existing SCCM resources, cutting down on administrative burden and cost associated with a Mac BYOD program.
If Ken Case seems a little exhausted, it’s understandable. Having transferred all five of their productivity apps to mobile in a program dubbed “iPad or Bust,” they immediately reversed direction, took lessons learned in designing for iOS, and started work on OmniFocus 2. They debuted the new look, and now begin the process of testing it with a group of users and integrating their feedback into a final version.
If Office for iOS ever emerges from the vapor and makes some folks happy and improves their iPad computing experience, that will be great. It certainly can’t hurt. However, I’ll be giving it a pass, and I expect most other iOS users will as well.
Microsoft has delivered an update for their Office Suite Mac 2011 to support Retina display graphics for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook documents. The update also brings a number of other enhancements and bug fixes to the Outlook program suite, including calendar event reminders and Mountain Lion compatibility for signatures.
Ninety-nine bucks is pretty expensive for the amount of use non-enterprise users would get out of PDF Convertor for Mac, but for small business and home office users—or anyone who needs the capability to edit PDFs, advanced PDF creation tools, OCR support, form tools, and robust encryption—PDF Converter for Mac is something of a no-brainer.
Microsoft never followed through on its promise to upgrade Office for full OS X 10.7 Lion compatibility, and has made no undertaking with regards to supporting OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion. This week, Microsoft indicated they’re in no hurry to address reports that MS Office apps look like “crap” on Apple’s new MacBook Pros with Retina Display.
As we get closer to the end of July, Apple is sending gentle reminders to its customers that the iWork.com services will be shutting down for good on July 31st. The reminder was sent out as an email by Apple, warning users that when iWork does shut down, “… you will no longer be able to access any of your stored documents on the iWork.com public beta site or view them on the web.”
Jumsoft has been developing quality themes and templates for OS X and iOS products such as Pages, Keynote, Mail and iWeb for quite some time now, and they continue to branch out to new apps for greater compatibility. Last week, the company launched Inspiration Set for Word, which includes 169 templates for Microsoft Word for Mac.
