The Joy of Mac’s release of Dropbox Encore got me thinking about what I ever did without Dropbox. Over the past few years using the service, I’ve become completely addicted.

Of course there are other cloud storage and synching services: Apple’s own iCloud, Box, iDolly, Google Cloud, Microsoft SkyDrive, and more. However, while they all have their virtues, none of them matches Dropbox for no hassle, transparent, “just works” functionality in the context of keeping work in progress—along with recently archived files—on several work platform laptops and my iPad harmoniously synchronized.

With Apple's stock in an unstable state and the press questioning its innovation, other competitors such as Samsung have taken the lead. Apple is rumored to be working on a new iPhone 5S as well as an iPhone 6, which is exactly what the company needs in order to retake some of the market share that they have lost. Tim Cook has been under fire in recent months, mainly because customers are becoming aware that Apple's current product lineup is made up of mostly refreshes of older devices.

Appidemic: Blaster X HD for iPad

“Over 400 levels of mental addiction” sounds more like a diagnosis to me than a promotional point, but that’s how 2GMG advertises Blaster X HD. Accurate? I can’t verify the 400 levels just yet, but the mental addiction part is spot-on in this challenging and attractive arcade puzzler.

What is it?

Blaster X HD is a game of physics; specifically, angles and velocity. It’s also marbles. You’ve got this blaster, which is basically a big ball. Then, you’ve got these orbs, which are basically small balls. It’s your job to ram the blaster into the orbs to clear them from the game grid in as few moves as possible.

Newt Gingrich is puzzled about what to call the device in his hand. Personally, I’d call it an iPhone in a Mophie case. Subscription software model: “Progressive?” Premature? How about just a bad deal for consumers?

Adobe has certainly stirred the proverbial pot with their bombshell announcement Monday at its Adobe MAX Creativity Conference in Los Angeles that, henceforth, new versions of their industry standard Photoshop image editing software and the rest of their Creative Suite imaging and video applications will be available only on a monthly rental basis via their Creative Cloud online service—at fifty bucks a month, no less. Ergo, no more shrinkwrapped versions sold for a licensing fee in perpetuity. Aside from the immediate and future direct implications for Creative Suite users, this development has created apprehension that it will become a more comprehensive software marketing and delivery motif adopted by other application software and computer operating system developers.

Microsoft is both, and an ominous conceptual proposal in a May 7th blog entry by Microsoft’s Clint Patterson commenting on Adobe’s policy move adds to the apprehension.

In his blog, Mr. Patterson notes that industry reaction has been mixed, with some pundits projecting the software rental dynamic as the future, while others perceive challenge. Some wonder specifically whether Microsoft’s Office is next.
