MacBook end of life: Thoughts on the last of the plastic Apple laptops

It’s unlikely that the white MacBook will be greatly missed. The iPad is a more economical solution for education users, and the MacBook Air is a more than worthy replacement for those who continue to prefer a clamshell laptop form factor. However, the MacBook’s termination does mark the end of the era of plastic-bodied Apple notebooks, which extends back to the original PowerBook 100 in 1991.

Apple has an Education Announcement on January 19th

On Thursday, January 19th at 10 a.m. EST, Apple will hold an event at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City to make an education announcement. According to 9 to 5 Mac, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue will likely announce new iBook or textbook products or services. This makes sense since Steve Jobs told Walter Isaacson he wanted to disrupt the school textbook industry.

Apple will sell MacBook only to schools

Apple has quietly removed the MacBook from the online Apple Store and will make the model available only to educational institutions for $899. Not individuals attending or working at schools, but the schools themselves. They also have older (and thus cheaper) iMacs on their online Apple Store that are only available to schools, as well.

Back to School: Is a Mac the right choice?

As students head back to school, many have dreams of computers dancing in their heads. Let’s be honest up front here, it’s hard to justify a new computer for your average high school student, but it’s definitely becoming a must-have for most college students. iTunes U reaches out to UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand
