Macs now students’ laptop of choice?
A recent study from Global Equities Research’s Trip Chowdhry suggests that 70% of university freshman were entering school with a Mac, which is way up from the 10-15% that entered school with a Mac a year ago. This may be too good to be true. The New Jersey based group Student Monitor claims: “Among those who planned to purchase a new computer, 87% planned to buy a laptop. And among those students 47% planned to buy a Mac.”
According to NDP, Apple has 91% of $1,000+ computer market
While many people look at the overall computer market share numbers and see that Apple has been sitting at around 10% for a while now, there may be a reason for this. It is well known how expensive Macs can be compared to their PC counterparts, but there is a reason for this—and it’s working. There is only one Mac laptop for under $1,000, and Apple seems to be content with that. They don’t want or need to compete in this lower market when they are doing so fantastically in the higher market.
A Storm in the Horizon, should Apple and their iPhone be worried?
Up until this point, Apple’s iPhone has been the only mobile touch screen device that has been worth buying. However, a new Blackberry from RIM may soon change that for many smart phone users. The Blackberry Storm, which has no release date yet, appears to be a direct shot at both Apple and the iPhone. With a large touch screen, nice camera, and even GPS, is this the first mobile device that will be able to compete with the iPhone in the touch screen market? Early predictions point to yes.
