Snow Leopard as we go; the first week
Well, we are about a week or so into Apple’s new operating system release, Snow Leopard, and all we’ve gotten are wallpapers and disk space. It certainly has been an interesting announcement and release, as people on the Internet have been discussing the price and whether it even constitutes a new operating system at all. But that’s neither here nor there. And while I’ve gotten my hands on a copy of Snow Leopard for only $10 (through the Up To Date program), I have yet to install it. I certainly have reasons for this, but I also wanted to provide my thoughts on the popular consensus of this release.
Snow Leopard marks domain over RTF; here’s how to reclaim your territory
Looks like Snow Leopard is an alpha male, at least when it comes to the RTF document format. If you use a word processor that saves to RTF by default, you’ll notice quite quickly that Snow Leopard is going to take control of all of your files, forcing them to open in TextEdit. In other words, double clicking your Nisus Writer documents or any filed tagged .rtf is going to launch TextEdit, not the program you used to create the file. Thankfully, there is a work around, and chances are you already know how to do it.
Snow Leopard: 64 bits explained
Today sees the release of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the latest update to Apple’s ever-popular operating system. There’s so much talk of the speed boosts and enhancements that what you’ll actually get may not seem so clear, so here’s what you can expect from Snow Leopard regarding 64 bit processing.
Snow Leopard available on Apple Store – ships by August 28th
The Apple Store has returned online with one noticeable change: the addition of Snow Leopard. Apple are now allowing customers to pre-order Snow Leopard, and says it will ship by August 28th. I would imagine it will also be available in Apple Retail Stores on August 28th, along with premium resellers and other outlets. Customers who pre-ordered from Amazon.com should also get the same treatment, with various people saying their transaction has changed status to “prepared for shipment.”
Apple Store is down – is Snow Leopard here early?
It would appear that the Apple Store is once again down, which signifies either maintenance (yeah, right) or that something will be stamped with a “new” sticker in a few hours. If it’s the later, could it be the latest version of Apple’s operating system, Snow Leopard, will hit the shelves a few weeks earlier than anticipated? Only time will tell as to what will be revealed when the curtain is again lifted on the Apple Store.
Mac OS X Snow Leopard reaches “Gold Master” status
People are talking about the current status of build 10A432 for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the new operating system that Apple will be shipping to their customers sometime in September. According to many, this build, which came after build 10A421a, has been designated as the “Gold Master.” In the software development field, this means that Snow Leopard has been tested enough by developers and consumers to make it nearly ready to ship.
Windows 7 pricing announced
Today, Windows announced the official pricing for Windows 7 for users who are upgrading, as well as for users who just want a new copy of the operating system. The prices are lower than we have seen before from the software giant, but they are still not nearly as low as Apple and Snow Leopard. That said, people around the net have declared Snow Leopard a “service pack,” while claiming that Windows 7 is a whole new operating system.
WWDC rumor roundup
With the 2009 Worldwide Developers Conference less than a week away, there’s plenty of speculation of what new products Apple will announce (especially after the dud that was MacWorld Expo). Here’s a roundup of the latest speculation (Snow Leopard, iPhone, Mac Netbook, Mac Tablet, Stevenote) along with the liklihood of it happening.
New screenshots and videos of Snow Leopard leaked
New leaked screen shots and videos posted on a Portuguese website showcase some of the new features we will be seeing in Mac OS X v10.6. Snow Leopard has been noted for being mostly a stability build to make Mac OS X more dependable, as well as slimming down its size. Therefore, most of the new features that are being added aren’t necessarily groundbreaking, but they are interesting nonetheless. Details and video past the jump.
Unified Marble user interface to appear in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?
Apple’s new version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, promises to bring some exciting overhauls to the back end of the Mac OS as we know it today. However, on top of all of this back end stuff, it now also appears as if Snow Leopard will sport a brand new interface across all of the Apple apps, giving Mac OS X a completely unified look. This user interface, which Apple has internally codenamed Marble, will bring about some small changes to the original Aqua theme that we can see in applications like iTunes.
